Hello Everyone,
New to this website. I have a 2005 Chevy Classic.

Recently I have been noticing that when going around 35-40 mph, the tach is reading around 1500 rpms. The engine seems to be running "high". There is no problem with the shifting of gears, the shifts are smooth, and right where they should be. It almost feels like the engine is over-reving, but the tach is at 1500 rpms. The tach is also jumping when you hit the accelerator. It will jump up to around 3000 when driving highway speed, but once you let off the gas, the tach goes back down to 1500 or so.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea.

Thanks so much in advance for all your help!

Welcome to the site!

As you may already know, the RPMs will jump up some when you step on the gas a little, and will move up more if it shifts down a gear. But jumping up to 3000 from 1500 sounds a bit much. Are you driving at 35-40 when this happens? How hard are you accelerating? If you're stomping it to the floor then 3000 is normal. If just a little then it sounds too high. What engine: 4-cyl or V6? Driving at 35-40 and then downshifting plus accelerating could put it into 2nd gear and then that sounds about right.

I think your Classic came with 2.2L ECOTEC. I don't know its history but, if it's been driven hard, it may have developed an exhaust leak. The "over-reving" may be just the increased noise level. Also, when the leak is severe, the motor tends to lose low-end torque and thus can get lively (rev-happy). Please get it check out soon.
