we go to start the car, fuel pump, lights, everything comes on but the starter makes no noise. i dont believe anti theft is the problem because i do not need to wait the 10 minutes that everywhere says to wait for it to start. alot of the time, if i put it in neutral and move it a little bit, it usually starts. tried another key after not starting yesterday and started right up...tried that this am, did not work. i had to rock it in neutral and it started in neutral. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

Does your car display that it is in park when you go to start it? Most vehicles will start in neutral if they cannot go into park, or know the car is in park. My only other thought is the starter is going bad.

burf79,

Thank you for the additional information about your situation. I see that you have posted that you have been told that it might be the gear shifter causing this; was this a diagnosis from the dealership?

This AM i had to rock the car about a foot in neutral and then it started.
How long are you going to wait to get it fixed ?
Posting status reports here won't help any !! :D

My '06 Sierra failed to start. Dealer replaced the starter/solenoid.
Three months later, same thing; no click, nothing.

I rolled it down the driveway (in neutral) and when the tow truck arrived, it started.
That time, at my suggestion, they replaced the park/neutral safety switch.
That was a year and a half ago; no trouble since.

I suspect that just shifting it or jiggling the shifter probably cures it temporarily; I doubt that the movement really has anything to do with it.

I dunno.

On my 2000, I KNOW the linkage has slipped some, and that's the problem.

You can FEEL the linkage drop in when you bump the gearshift when it won't let me turn it off and pull the key out.

(No, that's not the ONLY cause, but due to how convulated the linkage is, it's a "usual suspect").

Chill. Don't get your feathers all ruffled.

I did post information that I think will help you understand what is going on.

AND I think that you posting "It did it again......." every day is pretty much a waste of time.

When you pose a question, people will give you all kinds of "advice" and it may not always be what you want to hear. That doesn't necessarily mean that it is not useful though. ;)

one was a reply to someone else, and yes, i added that it did it that am. then i posted one more time, hoping that the chevrolet customer service person would halp, but she gave up i guess. I also have plenty of time;) as for "chill", i am chilled. i understand that i may not want to hear everything. it seems that i do need to rock the car. it wont start untill i do. just moving the shifter doesnt seem to do it. i appreciate you replying, dont get me wrong.

The point there is that there is nothing in the starter circuit that should be in any way affected by the tires moving a foot or two. It may just take that extra little bit of time while you are pushing the car for it to "settle" into neutral.

I have seen stranger things happen though.

I still think it is the "neutral safety switch".

I don't know......where it is located on this vehicle.......but like you, I would suspect it's near the shifter handle.

If there really IS a "shift controller" it probably is a different "computer" unit that helps control the transmission.

I would suggest that if you are serious about doing things like this yourself, your first investment should be in a shop manual.
