Does anyone know if the 08 Malibu will be available for rent at Hertz or Avis or another name-brand car rental agency in the near-future?

The new 'bu is already on rental lots. I've seen at least one Enterprise labeled LS locally, maybe two (not sure if the white cars were the same car on different days, but seen in locations roughly 30 miles apart).

Certainly not to the level of the previous generation. But that may be due to production issues, not an issue with rental companies having the new Malibu in their fleets.

I was hoping the rental car companies would NOT get them. It decreases the value of the non-rental cars in a few years when the companies unload them at auction.

The very first LTZ I saw was a rental. It was 9 months ago.

The CarMax here in Nashville was selling a LTZ that supposedly use to be a rental car.
Oh yes, these exist. My dealer has a Bronze LTZ bought from an auto auction that was an ex rental turned in at 10k. Perfect shape, but a rental.

Rental companies are still buying and using Malibus, but the difference is they aren't getting them in nearly as high of numbers and they're actually not getting all LS's or other base trims--the thought being to really make people impressed enough with them on a rental, that they want one. Our local Enterprise, for instance, has only had one I've seen but it's a Dark Gray 2LT V6...not exactly the base trim.

Lots of LS's and 1LT's, but overall, not nearly as many Malibu's as years before. GM and the companies realize the depreciation murder rentals and other fleet sales do, and are trying to make sure they don't repeat the same. So far it seems to be working, as the public sales side of the Malibu is still where most are with a much smaller portion seeing rentals. It won't go away, as it's a big part of every car maker's business, but they're trying to keep things balanced.
