For about 6 months my '09 LTZ had an intermittent rough idle problem. I had the car into two different dealers several times. On one trip they replaced the number one fuel injector, on the other trips the car behaved and didn't demonstrate the problem.

Well this trip the problem was found and repaired. The leakdown for the number one cylinder was at 80%, should be 15% to 20%. The problem was worn and loose valve guides. The dealership replaced the cylinderhead and the problem looks to be resolved.

My car currently has 52,000 miles on it. The powertrain warranty covered the repair, and the dealer provided a loaner car.

I want to thank Laura with Chevy Customer Service for her help. GM CS was super responsive and worked with the dealership to get my rental costs reimbured while the problem was being diagnosed. Once the problem was diagnosed the dealership provided a loaner (a new Malibu with 73 miles on it).

If you are having an issue with your car I highly recommend that you contact GM CS, they will bend over backwards to help you. They called when they said they would and in the end came through. They even called my on a Saturday, amazing.

Thank you all very much. :)

Can you tell me more on the type of knocking you were experiencing please? My car "ticks" pretty bad in the morning when i first turn her on. But it seems to go away as it warms up? its gotten progressively worse. I just dont want to take it into the dealership so they can tell me " unable to duplicate" and get stuck with a bill. :( im at 69k miles now.

No knocking or ticks at all. This was a rough idle. Usually I was at moderate speeds (45 to 55), come to a stop, and the car would shutter as if it was going to stall. It seemed to occur at air temps above 80 degrees and when the car was completely warmed up, and the motor totally heat soaked. Now I also had the same problem at an 80 mph cruise, the whole car shuttered several times like it was going to stall at speed. It got so bad I had to put it in manual and leave it in 5th.

So of course I got a massive stall yesterday, 90+ degrees out. It only happened once. I drove straight to the dealer. The service writers jaw hit the ground. I told him I'd drive it this weekend and see what happens.

Again the dealer, Henna Chevy, and GM have been very supportive and helpful. I simply don't have the time to keep messing with this nor risk having the car break down with the family in it.

Hellgate,

How did your Malibu run over the weekend? Let me if you need further assistance with this.

Michelle P., Chevrolet Customer Service
Hi Michelle,

In a word great, except when the same problems started and it stalled in an intersection. I've traded the car in for a 2010 Infiniti G37 sedan. I'm sorry, I really like my Malibu but I've run out of time, I can't keep going back and forth to the dealer.

Thanks very much for your help and support.

Dear Pete,

Thank you for getting back with me. I apologize that you had this issue happen to you again. I am really sorry to see you leave the Malibu family; however, you have to do what you feel is best for you and your family.

In the future, if you need assistance from me, don’t hesitate to contact me. I realize that you are no longer a Malibu owner, but I am here for other General Motors questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Michelle Phillips, Chevrolet Customer Service
