Any one know if the dealer will do the work or do I need to go to a custom shop.
How much would I be looking at and how does the number system work?
Thanks for the info I am new to the forums here.

I have a Malibu 2LT 2009. Imperial Blue with ebony interior.
2.4L 4cyl with the 6 speed auto.
No Custom addons yet but I want to get an in-dash navi (if you want to recommend a system go for it)

Most dealerships will do it, but Malo83 is right, they are usually much more expensive. There are lots of places in every city that will do the job, you should expect to pay around $200.00. Be wary of anyone who will do it for alot less, there are people here in San Antonio that say they'll do it for $150.00 but that doesn't include a lifetime warranty and it's a lower quality film. Make sure you get a lifetime warranty for parts and labor (in writing).

As for the numbering system you mentioned, I am going to assume you are talking about the 5,15,20,35 numbers that are common with window tint. These numbers represent the amount of light that the tint will allow to pass through (this may not be a 100% accurate representation of what they stand for, but effectively that's what it means). 5% is DARK "Limo" tint and is generally illegal. Tint laws vary by state but even here in the deep south, I think 25% is the lowest you can go. There are laws in many states that say as long as you have side view mirrors you could basically paint the back window black, but the sides are limited. That said, I had 5% all the way around on an old car in MD and never had a problem until I went to sell it.

Check local shops, see what they charge, see where they will do the work. The shop should be very clean since any dirt floating around can get trapped between the glass and the film.

Not sure where you are located, but the "dealer" is really just the shop you would have probably taken it too anyway doing the work, and the dealer charging a markup. Like they said, just find a good shop with a good referral...

I had mine tinted, came out great... except after, I learned NH laws state that nothing can be on the front two side windows. So, I'll have to strip those off.

So, make sure you check your local laws before you apply tint. Folks will apply it, charge you money, then you'll find out you won't be able to get an inspection sticker later... or worse, pulled over by the police.

The tinting company around my area will offer "insurance"...if you get pulled over they will rip off the tint for you to show the court to get the ticket dismissed, then you go back to the tint place and get it put back on. The insurance is like $40 and they put brand new tint, not re-apply the same sheets they used when they took the tint off.

I paid $150 for mine with lifetime warranty. $150 to $175 is a good price.

kurly, what % did you have done on yours? I have an appointment tuesday to have mine done and thinking of 35% up front and 20% in the rears. Here in missouri i can have only 35% on the drivers and passengers windows and anything on the rear windows. having it done for $200.00 with lifetime warranty by a local tint shop. will post pics after it's done.

You can tint your windows in the USA/ its illegal here in western Canada. You can't tint the front windows at all. I think you can go 15 inches down from the top but not a full tint. No tint on the side windows.

Sure enough, went to get my State of NH Inspection Sticker, and they said, NH LAW - NO TINT/FILM on front glass. So, they were going to reject my car unless I took it off.

Cheese&Crackers!!! Took me a full day to get the tint off the front glass, and man, what a messy job! I used a hair dryer and the film peeled right off, but left a nasty gooey mess on the glass. I had to use Goo Be Gone and a lot of elbow grease.

But I still have the rear windows and rear windshield.
