Good afternoon! Quick questions please...

Somewhere on here I saw that the exhaust system from the 2.0 will fit on the 1.5 (maybe wrong but that's why I'm asking). If that is so, will the Borla axle-back system (Malibu 2016-2020 Axle-Back Exhaust S-Type part # 11936) work also?

That's an axle back exhaust with clamps to connect to an existing Y-pipe. Does your 1.5L Malibu have a Y-pipe and dual outlets from factory?

At the end of the day, a good muffler shop can make this work pretty easily regardless, but if you don't have factory dual exhaust, it's not a direct fit.

Nope. Mine doesn't have the "Y" pipe, that would have to be added. There is one on eBay that includes the "Y" pipe but that thing is $199 for shipping. Think I could save by having a local shop do it and have a better exhaust...

Need to get the rear valance set up first.

Thanks!

My 2020 RS with the 1.5 has the dual outlet setup so I'm figuring the axleback will bolt up, yes? But where can ya find one besides ebay?

If it currently has a single pipe then you'll either need the "Y" pipe added (by a local shop) and buy the Borla exhaust or buy the off-brand one from eBay that has it.

I have the dual outlet just like the 2.0 Malibus. So far, the only place I've found the exhaust is on ebay. would rather buy from a supplier.

Nice ride! I'm going to put that valance and outlets on mine soon.

Borla has an axle back system but your local muffler shop would need to fab a "Y" pipe to connect it to the factory pipes.

He already has dual exhaust, so it wouldn't need a new y-pipe unless it's somehow different than the 2.0T exhaust layout.

Interesting thought. If you look at the two images I posted above, you could wonder if the factory duals would fit (and attach) from the flange all the way back... Now I need to look underneath and see if anything is in the way for that.

About $450 for that.

What's your goal for the exhaust modification? When you posted the axle-back, I assumed you wanted a bit of sound along with the nice dual exhaust appearance.

$450 for the OEM catback exhaust system (before shipping charges) isn't a bad price, but that doesn't include the rear valance. Also, everything before the y-pipe is redundant to your current set up and it will not provide much (if any) change to exhaust sound.

The most economical solution would be to purchase the rear valance and then talk to a reputable muffler shop about setting up a y-pipe and dual mufflers. In that case, you could get the whole job done for around $500 total.

You're right. That would be the most economical and will be what I do. Just offering alternatives. Worried a little about sound though, don't want a bumble bee following me everywhere.

A good shop will know the right mufflers for a mellow sound, and probably let you test it before it's permanently welded. There's always a risk of drone from any 4-cylinder exhaust mod. Very difficult to make them sound sporty yet refined.

Whatever you do, feel free to post your results here with video. I'm sure a lot of owners are curious about the result.

I didn't think the 2020 RS has the duals, just has the valance
I think this is correct. The pics I have seen show the tailpipe sticking down below the left opening. The right is just an open hole.
I will be at the dealer tomorrow, I can take a peek if it matters at all. By the looks of it at the very least it is a basic tailpipe pointed down at a show opening.

So I crawled under my 2020 RS and took pics. As you can see, it has dual outlets and dual mufflers from the factory. So is Borla the best option or is there a better idea for a bit of tone out the back. It's pretty quite as it is.
Cool! Thanks for following up. I'm really glad they didn't fake dual exhaust on the RS package.

Not kicking you in the chops over this, but "... didn't fake dual exhaust ..." made me chuckle. Even though a single pipe that is split out at the end is considered "fake" for those who romantically harken back to the "true" dual exhausts of yesteryear's Muscle Cars, the data seems to support the idea that a single larger pipe is more efficient at moving the same quantity of air than 2 pipes with a total equalling a 2D cross-section of the single pipe.

The reason, as I understand it, is that a single pipe has less pipe exposed to the exhaust stream than the 2 pipes do, making the 2 pipes cause the exhaust stream to slow more than when in the single pipe.

Formulas used are:
  • Pi x Radius(squared) for the cross-section
  • Pi x Diameter for the circumference of the cross-section

@obxbill Thank you for crawling under and sharing that picture. I had swore I read a complaining review about the CVT and fake dual exhaust on the RS. Certainly has two mufflers in that pic. Enjoy your possible mods!
