so i finally tracked down a console on ebay with the rear power outlet to retrofit my 2010 malibu. got it today and fully broke down the console, and did not find anything that resembled a inverter box. does anyone know anything about these power outlets? is there a inverter box or is this such a low wattage outlet that it did not have it. the wiring is very thin for a inverter. i know i need the rear panel and the wiring harness but i thought there was a inverter box as well

the console however has a ton of parts! perhaps the most complex console i ever broke down. i could take pics if anyone is interested.

here is how the panel looks like

this is the part number of the wiring harness. i do not know if all cars have the same one

this is the front section of the console wiring harness, i am guessing this is the same on all cars. it connects to the front 12v plug and lighted gear selector

this is the rear panel with the rear wiring harness

this is the back of the plug piece

i think that pictured here is all the parts needed to retro fit the car

pictured here is the wiring harness of the center console connected to everything that its connected to (2 12V ports, 1 110v port, the lighted gear display)

this is all the parts the console wiring harness plugs into. there is only one empty plug which i guess goes somewhere behind the dash

this is the rear of the 110v panel

console fully broken down. was needed to remove wiring harness but not for removal of the rear panel

fully assembled console purchased on ebay

sorry i was not able to change the original title to include "warning pic heavy"

these are just preliminary pics of me breaking down to the needed parts. i still do not know if this will work.

does anyone know the wattage and amperage that this outlet is rated for? the wires are really thin, dont think i would run anything but a charger. and the round ground hole is just for show, its just a hole for the third prong to go into.

i still do not know how does this convert from 12v to 110 without a inverter box

Or convert from DC to AC for that matter.

I've got a feeling that you are missing a major part somewhere.

bringing this post back up, just so not to start another one. i actually do not own a malibu, my brother does, he is a member here as well. but i look here for help installing things like this and tech info to help him out.

i do not always get much time to study his car to install this but this i do know, that i do need a inverter for this to work and i know the part number for it. i read that the inverter is "behind R. inner 1/4 trim". if someone can take a pic of this for me i would greatly appreciate it! or if someone can have a look to see if the wiring for it is there i would appreciate it as well. it may be a orange plug

thanks

gopedxr7,
Did you ever get this install figured out/completed? I am interested in doing the same thing on 09 LTZ and would appreciate any info you could share. Do you happen to have a list of part numbers for all the required parts?

well i need more info on the project. i am actually doing this as a project for my brother. i do not get to see and study the car much since he does not live here. but i need to know if there is any wiring in the trunk for a inverter. if there is no wiring then this project is not worth it. but i do not get to see his car that often.

i have a thing for adding features that may have not been factory origional

There is an inverter option available for the rear console. The wiring uses the 12V supply for the 12V outlet, but also turns on only when a plug is inserted. There should be an appropriate 12V supply in the trunk if that's where you're gonna hook it up.

Is there any way to replace the 12V outlet only? My cover / round flap that you lift up to use the outlet broke off! I want to fix but was not sure if you can replace that piece or you have to replace the whole back power source? Is this hard to do?

I was thinking of the Dealership fixing but I can just imagine on how much they would charge! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'd check out the junkyards or your auto parts store. I've never liked live hinges, which are the kind that have a hinge that folds, because they eventually weaken and break off. At the store you can find various replacements, or you can take an accessory add-on type and repurpose it to replace your broken one. One in particular uses a spring-loaded cover but it may not fit without a little modification. What is in your favor is all 12V outlets are the same size so the hole should be rather close, if not exactly the same size. For the wiring you'll need to modify the factory wires/ends, but if you take the end off your stock outlet you might be able to fashion it to work with the replacement, which gives you the bonus of being able to unplug it if the console ever needs work.

so far i have found inverters on ebay so i know what the harness looks now which is great. the problem now is i cant find the plugs in the trunk that the inverter would go into. so this project might be a bust if non equiped cars do not have the plug in the trunk
