Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement on 2.4L

1. Reposition the hose clamp (1) away from the end and remove the PCV hose.
2. Loosen both of the outlet duct clamps (2).
3. Pull the air cleaner outlet duct (3) straight up to detach the ball studs.

Tighten clamp (2) to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

Question............

Since the air intake and engine cover are molded as one piece, are the extensions off the intake tube solid or hollow? If they're hollow, do they open up into the intake?

What i'm thinking of doing if taking my dremel and cutting the engine cover away from the intake and leaving the cover off the engine. I'm just wondering if cutting through the extensions that hold them together would cause a leak into the intake.

I didn't realize that they were one piece. Looks like a good opportunity for an aftermarket product.

I'm not sure if it's safe to cut into it. Besides, my dremel skils aren't there for me to even think about doing. What would be the point? The motor is already noisy enough. Plus, I hate crud getting into the spark plug holes.

As part of a CAI kit, maybe?

Eh, a CAI is out of the question. I don't want any sore pf performance mods on this car, that's what my truck is for.

And as for why I would want to do such a thing...... I'm sure some of the board members can understand, but i'm a gearhead at heart. There's just something about seeing an engine and watching it run that I need to have. So because of this I want the engine cover to go away.

Starship, is this a new design for the 2010 2.4? I don't think my 2009 was a one piece design. I only changed the oil one time in the 09, so I don't remember.

If you wish, you can replace it with an air duct of your own making. It just needs to go from the air cleaner cover to the TB (with a nipple for the PCV hose). Then, be careful not to spill or drop anything on top of all that hardware.

It's been like that, all years, as far as I know.

A few folks over at the Solstice forum have been removing the cover. Then they powder coat the valve train cover. I have some extra VT covers at work, I may get one of them powder coated.

Have you tried feeling for it? I suppose it can be awkward bending and reaching. Before you go any further, you may want to consider the trouble reinstalling the cover.

Does anyone know where i could buy the air cleaner outlet duct clamp that goes over the throttle body. The only thing I have found was the whole cover which would cost too much. I just need the rubber part. #2 on the picture.

Junk yard might have one if you can find a Malibu there.

Will have to make box to channel air to your filter or you will just be sucking hot engine bay air.

Have been couple post of issues that come up using this type setup .

Hmmm.. thought there might be an issue with sucking warm engine bay air.. I will peruse the boards a bit more. Sure would like to dump the goofy engine cover. Thanks.

This is one reason why I joined this forum. I wish to do away with all the snap on pretty plastic pieces that retain heat/limit access to the engine.

I was hoping there was already a thread or two about a quick and easy (cheap) way to route tubing from the TB to air filter housing that is not an eyesore. I'm thinking about doing away with that plastic housing too. I need to come up with a ducting material that won't be prone to heat sink. And I don't want the typical aftermarket CAI that locates the filter in the hot engine bay.

Might have to use a different 72mm MAF as the Bu's MAF is integral.

I am not intentionally looking for more power, MPG or throaty sound. But those would be a bonus.

Definitely not looking for a home depot CAI.
