I have an 01 malibu with v6 and the haynes book says to use:

AC type 41-963 platinum, or equivalent @ 0.050 inch

My question is that most sites I have checked recommend plugs with .060

I was looking into getting the ngk IRIDIUM IX tr55ix #7164 or the acdelco 41902 both of which are .060

I found the denso 5070 which is .050 but the short design.

What do you guys recommend?

As much as i hate platinum plugs....i would just use the recommended plugs. Had a 2000 z24 with the 2.4lL It said it needed platinum plugs....I tried to change that....car barely idled...wouldnt run right . Swapped in the platinum version....vroom...ran like a champ
Platinum plugs suck....i know...they are pricey....they foul easily...but in my case I HAD to run them

Don't forget the front O2 sensors. Spark plugs worn out so are the sensors. The ones in the exhaust manifolds control fuel mixture and will affect mileage. They get ''lazy'' and may not be bad enough to set a failure code but will affect mileage.
Plug gap may be listed on the underhood sticker.
