First my spelling and gramer suck so overlook them please second i am no mechanic and don't claim so. that being said i own a 2005 chevy malibu MAXX get it straight that is the wagon with the front end of the [6th generation Malibu] it has the 3.5l v6.
I have replaced the trans a week ago and have had other issues over its life time. 3 major wrecks and a life of delivering news papers gives a vehical a hard life. it has over 200k miles on it and runs like a champ. still keeps org gas milage even. recently bout 4 months ago i replaced the axles but screwed up and got the non abs ones. figured since i will prob replace againg after a while i could live with the light saying abs is out. and did for a good long while. no here i input that news delivery IS NOT STANDARD DRIVING we run cars hard driving at really fast stop and go paces as well as many arough road and pot hole. i have been known to make as few as 40 u-turns in a single night (culdisacs) at speeds of 25 to 30 mph or stop within 50 ft of where i tossed the paper out when i we doing 30plus. in other words think of my driving as if everything we are taught not to do is done. i am hard on cars.
Back to the issue. i have non abs axles on an abs system. everything was fine for a long time even thru having to get new pads (about every other month or so). recently i am having some kind of catch where i step on the brakes and its like hitting a vibrating wall on the peddle. i hit the brakes and nothing the peddle doesnt go down without romping on it and there is little reponce till-- the 3 light come on "BRAKES, ABS, AND TRACTION CONTROL" those are the key of knowing you have brakes i recently found the hard way and rear ended a honda crv -dont worry im fine and the malibu is still going. new upper rad support and fenders bumper and hood and all is good. but twas the brakes that did it i had no brakes.
I have since found that sometimes if i manually turn off the abs the brakes will work on the first try. most times i eirther ave to ride the brakes at a smooth pace till the 3 come on then all is good til i restart the car. (reitteration -- everything was fine months after the axles put in.) normal braking after the lights come on and up until the car is shut off it is just that main initial stop that gets ya. remember rolling california stops and corners in my world are just a thing i dont stop or slow for them no body is out at 3 and 4 am.
If anybody has any ideas i would love to read. just read about air in the abs didnt know about that one. or questins or clarifications ask and i will give the info if i can or read until i can get the info you want. i tend to research issues since i live off of my cars and like to keep rolling i drive more miles in a single night on city strets than truckers do going long distance.
