The act of unplugging and plugging back in a number of times burnishes the contacts. If you were to use a brass brush it would be less likely to scratch the terminals and therefore less likely to add crevices for more corrosion to form.

The grease is non-conductive and is there for one purpose: to seal out the environment and help prevent further corrosion by limiting how much moisture and oxygen can attach the metal.
