The thread title was adjusted to say Malibu instead of Impala in order to keep things consistent.

Step 1: Get the trouble codes scanned.

Report this problem to GM and the NHTSA. I had a 2006 Maibu that was recalled for this problem and my paperwork does indicate that the recall does not cover the 2007 Malibu. Strange that the 2007 Saturn version of this car is covered and the 2008 Malibu is also covered. Perhaps they simply have not had enough 2007s report this problem.

My 06 did have a seperate problem related to the power steering. There is a fuseible link [identified as power steering] in the underhood fuse box that suffered some corrosion and it resulted in a complete electrical power loss. Not just steering power but all electrical power, as if there was no battery in the car. If I recall correctly this fusible link is 40 amp and is located at the end of the fusebox [underhood] close to the windsheild. I disconnected the battery, removed this link and cleaned the ends and contacts, reinstalled and all power came back and the problem never returned. I beleive it was held in with screws. Might want to give that a try.

Just to add , my 2006 had the recall done for power steering. Not sure what was done, but I noticed a clunk was gone in the dead zone of the steering wheel.

More than likely when they had the steering shaft out to replace the steering angle sensor they greased the intermediate steering shaft as that was a source for a clunk.
