Thanks for the response. I brought it to a Big O Tires and wouldn’t put it past them to misdiagnose and was already thinking about getting a second opinion, I think that’s what I’ll do now for sure!
Thanks for the response. I brought it to a Big O Tires and wouldn’t put it past them to misdiagnose and was already thinking about getting a second opinion, I think that’s what I’ll do now for sure! The steering rack is not know for problems so I would be sure to check other things first. The intermediate shaft can cause a clunk and is subject to a TSB or recall. The torque sensor was also the subject of a recall. Perhaps a second opinion from another alignment shop is in order.
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out, this information will be very helpful for a novice like myself. I was quoted about $700 for this job at two places, I briefly checked rockauto and found some steering racks relatively cheap so I will be ordering that soon and come back to this thread with any questions!View attachment 72174
that one circled in light blue..
I removed that and was able to slide the whole thing out from the drivers side...
which is also where you will be working on the int shaft.. of course you will have to remove the passenger wheel as well in order to get to the rack and pinion bolt on that side. this is a tip that may be hard to come by, as I havent seen anyone else mention it.
just as a disclaimer, I cannot guarantee that your vehicle is like mine, and I cant guarantee something wont shift when you remove it..
but in my case.. nothing even slightly budged from removing it. just replaced it after pulling the rack and sliding new one in place.
honestly the intermediate shaft was more difficult than the rack, due to the position of it.. you will see what I mean.
