Has anyone seen this behaviour on your Malibu?

Scenario:

1. Have passenger in car, front seat.
2. Seat belts are fastened for driver and passenger.
3. Airbag indicator for passenger shows "ON" (which is normal).
4. Drive car to destination.
5. Stop car, but leave car running and in Drive (I am dropping someone off at school). My foot is on brake.
6. I manually unlock car door locks via unlock/lock switch on door.
7. Passenger unfastens seat belt and exists car, shuts door.
8. I proceed to drive the car and within 2 to 3 mins, I get a warning chime (seat belt). Looking at the Airbag indicator, it still shows "ON". Warning system still chiming (and this repeats 5/10 mins later.
9. Resolve by stopping car, car in park, and restarting car.

Question. Is this normal or a bug?

Thoughts anyone?

That's not "normal." There's something going on with the Passenger Presence System (PPS). Maybe the PPS module is crashing and the BCM is just going by the last known state. I suggest taking it in for service.

I had the same issue with my 2008 LT2. Passenger airbag / seatbelt light was coming on and staying on for periods of time. With the ignition on and light on I found that if I manually moved the seat back and forth the light would go off. Checking the wiring connection under the seat I found the wife for seatbelt /airbag connection to be binding. I was able to unplug and move the wiring to a position that it would not bind and it cleared the problem. Have not had the light come back on since. (Over a year). It may not be your problem, but it something easy to check. Good luck.

just took mine to the dealer for the same thing. Our issue was we had "debris" in or near the seatbelt (driver) sensor. Car did not think that the seatbelt was buckled. They took the belt connector apart and cleaned out. Good to go now.

how do you take seat air bags off side of seat
Air bags....ON the seats.......I feel that I'm about to learn something new.

Messing with the air bags can be tricky......and even dangerous.

I don't know that you could count on them working correctly after a change like that.

My best advice would be to contact a body shop or two for a recommendation.

This probably is not a DIY kind of project.
