Hi guys,

I just wanted to say hello and say that I work for a drivers' ed school and we have 4 2009 Malibus (1 LT and 3 LS models) and 2 2010 Malibus (LS models). I am an engineer that got laid off from an OE lighting supplier that was just down the interstate from the old Guide Corp, so hopefully my observations and insight on the Malibu can help/benefit the chevymalibuforum.com community.

For the last 20 years, the drivers ed school used Cavaliers as the mechanicals were near bulletproof (cannot say the same for body panels and interior bits though). I have been driving an 09 LS for about 12 months now and just turned over 29,000 miles. The LT in the fleet has 20,000 miles, and the other 2 LS models are just under 18,000 miles.

I spend about 6 to 7 hours per day in the Malibu.

Some of you may wonder why we have Malibus. Short answer... we've known about the Cobalt's inferior steering system (breaks often) in the drivers ed community since the car replaced the Cavalier. No good. We have had Chevrolet products for nearly 30 years. Corvettes are too expensive for fleet use in drivers ed, but we are the first and ONLY drivers ed school in the USA to purchase a Corvette for fleet use on the drivers ed discount program!

The Malibus have been very good. :) We just purchased the two 2010s today because they have been so good. I can say that the only complaint that I have is with the suspension/steering clunk noise that nearly all of them have (for some reason the LT does not have it). Other than that, they are proving themselves to be very reliable.

On the trip computer, we seem to average 20mph. MPG average is about 23.5 (not much highway driving).

OH... I almost forgot. The blower motor makes the most ANNOYING ticking sound on the low setting in certain conditions that I can NEVER seem to duplicate at the dealership.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to being on here!

Thanks for the insight and info. You have probably summed up what five Malibu owners would have said too. Glad the cars are working out for the business and it speaks tons on how reliable they are.

I've got that clunk too. Dealer replaced the steering shaft or something (can't remember), and it didn't help. Said they'd replace the whole steering unit/rack, but haven't determined it to be enough of a problem.

I too have a LT and no steering clink (1 yr/13k mi.). I also hear that sound from A/C when on low, and cannot figure out where it's coming from.

Could you possibly see how many were mad in at the Orion/Fairfax plants. It seems that a lot of the problem cars are coming from Orion (for whatever reason).
