GM Plans To Cancel Production Of Chevrolet Malibu Sedan

Published:12-June-2009
By Staff Reporter

General Motors (GM) is planning to stop the production of Chevrolet Malibu sedan for the 2010 model year, owing to declining sales.

The US market slump, coupled with volatility in demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, has led to a backlog of inventory of the vehicles on dealer lots.

A GM spokesman was quoted as saying that the company made the decision because of a “sufficient stock of 2009,” and said that “starting up production in the near future is possible, but not likely.”

Fuel-efficient hybrid-electric versions of Chevrolet Malibu were introduced in 2008, to enhance the portfolio of fuel-efficient models in order to compete effectively with Japanese automakers. However, GM will continue to manufacture hybrid versions of its trucks, including Chevrolet Silverado and Cadillac Escalade, in 2010 - as quoted in wsj.com.

Is.... is this a joke? Why on earth would they stop one of their best-selling Chevrolets? That makes absolutely no sense.. stop the stupid Impala that they haven't redesigned since freaking 2006..

They should just fire every member of the UAW that doesn't want to take the concessions proposed and replace them.. not like GM couldn't find people to replace them.

I am so moving to BMW.

I think they are refering to the Hybrid version which was not worth the money anyway. You can get as good mileage with the 4 cyl alone.

I know the BU hybrid is gone but I never knew they were gonna quit making the sedan. How sad that would be. I think GMs got a winner with the BU. What is wrooog with GM?

AND +1 on the Impala.

idk Sandhopper after looking for a few stories about it they were very specific to mention "Malibu Sedan".. rather than "Malibu Hybrid" as the previous stories said a few days ago..

I think as an owner of GM now I should step in and just fire everyone on the UAW that doesn't agree to the concessions.. it's not like GM can't find someone else to replace them.

This must just be some bad journalism... There is no way GM would let the Malibu at this point. If so we might as well kiss GM good bye... Whats next the Tahoe?

If you look at the last paragraph it is talking about the hybrid, not the regular. Just bad journalism as someone else said.

That was a bad journalism to me. Here is the similar news from WSJ that had almost exact language except that it clearly spelled out the "hybrid": GM Cancels 2010 Malibu Hybrid Amid Slow Sales: WSJ
I would trust Wall Street Journal and Fox News than that less-known automotive business magazine.

It could also be for the regular... if they have too many unsold 2009's they could suspend production for a year or part of the year, etc., and then pick it up again later. I think they overproduced this car due to reviews & such, and cars just aren't selling.

No way they are planning on stopping production on the Malibu. They have already announced the 2010 models and the Malibu was one of them minus the Hybrid.

The Malibu is GMs #1 selling car through last month for the year. The only vehicle that has outsold it is the Silverado.
