My friends car just quit going down the road. has metal shavings in the oil pan and filter. I said his engine is shot. what other year can he use to replace it. Or would it be possible to remove the head and hone the cylinders and change piston rings and all that. Or is that a wast of time because the camshaft may be damaged?

Any Gen7 engine should fit, but beware. When I bought my 2011 3.6L V6 in 2010, it later developed a knock that turned out to require the dealer to overhaul the engine. The number of teeth on the crank had been changed, so the first crankshaft they got was wrong and they had to specify a different one.

If yours is the 2.4L, which it sounds like it is based on you saying "head" and not "heads", it might need the same attention paid to what you get.

You can call a dealership parts department for some guidance. After you pick yourself up off the floor at how expensive an engine is, you might have more info to help you along the way.

Thank you for your service I've looked at some of the princess I don't know much about it just based off him. But what work I have done on cars I would be looking for more options and I said I would look around for him. Seen this and there's a lot of good info and people that have been around there cars for along time thank you
Given the number of fleet Gen7 Malibu's, you should be able to find a used engine at an auto salvage yard pretty inexpensively.
Friend of mine had a 2014 Malibu (Gen8) with a non-turbo 4 cyl engine that went bad. Picked up a low mileage complete engine from a salvage yard for $350. He and one of his sons had it swapped out in a day. He did need to bring it to a mechanic to have the computer flashed so the electronics would communicate.

You can find good used motors at wrecking yards for good prices. And if it's a wrecking yard with a good reputation they will inspect a few things to make sure it's a good motor and can even tell you if it's a match for the car you are looking for. But if you don't intend on doing the swap yourself a shop could charge anywhere between around $1500-$2000. If you've never swapped out a front wheel drive car engine I don't recommend it unless you are a fast learner, have done other engine swaps, can squeeze into tight places and have a tool selection that is way more than what you think you might need, then go for it.
