Hello people! I have been having some issues with my 2015 Malibu lt 80k miles.. I'll start from the beginning. About 3 months ago I got a check engine light with code p0171. It was winter, and I had heard of other people getting this code in cold weather only before. It would come on for a day or two, then be off for a few days constantly. I figured because it was intermitten I wouldn't worry about. There were no performance issues either. Then about 2 weeks I bought new wheels and tires and I went up in size. Stock was 215/60r16 on 16x7.5 wheels, new were 235/50r18 on 18x8 wheels. Everything ran smooth for a few days.
Then one day as I was almost home from my 30 minutes commute I got a service stabilitrak warning and the whole car shut off and slowly came to a stop. It started back up, I made my way 2 blocks home and checked the codes again. p0171 and p0106. I took it to midas the next day and it shut down like that 3 times on the 15 minute drive, only now it is much more of a aggressive stop. The rpms will bounce around 500-2000, I get the service stabilitrak warning, car shuts off only it is a very bumpy and rough stop, feels like the engine is vibrating hard.
I took it to a local Micas, they diagnosed it and replaced the MAF sensor. I payed them and drove off with no engine lights. Everything was smooth I made it home. I decided to cruise around my neighborhood to extend the test drive. Still had the same issue. Check engine back on and same stability warning.
I go back to Midas again, car breaking down multiple times on the way there. They replaced the MAF sensor again and said the original replacement must of been faulty. What are the chances of 2 faulty sensors in a row? I test drive about a half hour and its still happening.
This 3rd time I go back to Midas, I bring my stock wheels and ask them to put them on, they do so and clear the codes. At this point I'm desperate, and the wheels/tires are the only thing I changed before this started happening ( I did fill up on gas right before the break down, could this be bad gas?). I drive for about 45 minutes, and the same issue comes back again, after replacing the MAF sensor and reverting to stock wheels and tires.
Is my car posessed? I'm pretty confident Midas has no idea what the issue is, I only went there because the dealership is closed on Saturdays. The next day I test drove about 45 minutes with the stock wheels still on and didnt have any issues, even though it broke down with stock wheels the day before. It seems to only happen when the engine is really warm. Do you guys think the issue is resolved? I topped up on new gas from somewhere else on my most recent test drive. I have a long commute in a pretty busy city tomorrow so it is very stressful and dangerous when my car shuts off in the middle of the road.
I have read of other people having this issue, and chevrolet claiming to fix it, only to have it happen again 15 k miles later. At this point I don't trust my car and I'm considering trading it in and moving away from GM. I guess I just need some advice. What do you guys think the issue may be and is it worth keeping the car?
