Hey everyone, I tried to do a brake job on my 2016 Premier this week (recently purchased hence the new user ID). Front was straightforward, just like any typical car. When I did the back, I really screwed up. I have never done a brake job on a car with an electronic parking brake before so I didn't know about the need to put the parking brake into "service mode." Long story short, in desperation, I set the parking brake while the caliper was off and the piston screwed completely off the caliper. Not good. I've searched everywhere trying to find a general Chevrolet or Malibu specific procedure on how to put the brake into "service mode" with no luck. Does anyone know how to do this? Appreciate the help.

I don't have any help for you, but I'm on your side.

It seems that this new feature, and electronic parking brake, comes with its own set of Murphy's Laws. You'd think that if they're gonna replace a manual e-brake with an electronic one (an "e-e-brake"? ;)), they'd also figure a way for it to take care of itself rather than need an owner to read War and Peace.

I'll stop my rant now . . .

You'll need a scan tool to put the car in electric parking brake "EPB" service mode. This will reset the caliper, similar to using a C clamp on non EPB cars to get the caliper piston reset. I haven't done this myself yet, but have done some research in anticipation of my Malibu's "high tech" rear pad change.

What @va2001ss said. I checked and it does list place EBCM in service mode by selecting EBCM/Control/rear brake caliper piston retract using scan tool as step 4 for replacing rear pads with RPO J71.

Perhaps someday they'll put enough tech on these cars to turn the drain plug into an actuator. Then we can use scan tools for oil changes! Or maybe washer fluid; a scan tool released actuator cap on the fluid reservoir instead of that burdensome plastic cap!

I'm waiting for the day when I can hit the eject button so I don't have to climb out of my car...

To access service mode, which permits the rear caliper pistons to be retracted for new pad installation, do the following:
1. Ignition on; engine off.
2. Press on service brake pedal.
3. While holding pedal down, push down on the park brake switch for 15 seconds.
4. A flashing letter P with a wrench symbol will appear in the display. You can now compress the caliper pistons.
5. When the brake work is fully completed, put your foot on the pedal and pull up on the park brake switch.

I found that this procedure did not work for me BUT the 2020 Silverado procedure did!

No scan tool needed!

1. With engine running hold brake pedal down with EPB held down until the flashing letter P flashes. (12 seconds-ish)
2. You have 5 seconds to : let go of brake pedal and EPB button and immediately hit the EBP switch once.
3. Listen to rear EPB motors release!
4. Your Flashing P with wrench symbol with now stay flashing.
5. Do a rear brake job like a normal car.
6. When brake job complete, Start engine and hold brake pedal and LIFT EPB button.
7. Listen to EPB motors got back to normal and flashing P will go out.

BTW - I have a 2016 Malibu Premier with the turbo 4 cylinder/ 8 speed Transmission.
