2017 Malibu Wireless Charger / Wireless Charging Upgrade Completed
I successfully upgraded the wireless charger / wireless charging in my son's 2017 Malibu to use the GM retrofit wireless charger that is compatible with iphone 8 and 10. Part #84526978.
I would say I definitely did not do it 100% by the book but it is fine and looks like factory once put back together so I don't know that I care too much about the how. If people are interested and I get time i'll add something to the "how to" section. For instance, that brown plastic console piece around the top of the module (see added pics) should be removed for installation but I couldn't get it so i figured out a way to get the module out fairly cleanly.
But here is a vid of it working with iphone 8 in a case and rubber boot in place...

Note that the upgrade/retrofit module was not designed with the Malibu in mind because it has a connector port that is built on the side of it instead of the "bottom" like the original module. See last pic of attachments. It doesn't appear to affect anything other than I could only screw the top two screws that hold the module to the console trim but it seems fine.
