IHA 1997 Chevy Malibu 2.4L in which the AC compressor is not kicking on. I checked the 10Amp fuse - good. THere is a bus for the compressor under the hood on teh drivers side. How can I tell if it's good? It has four prongs. Is there a way to test it? The AC had never been charged. Over the last 3three years it started to get less adn less cool. I assumed the compressor wasn't kicking in as a safety feature when the coolant gets too low. I filled the coolant to about 35 PSI. Still not kicking in.

Ideas?

Skrappi, I'm sorry to say this but it could possibly be that your compressor is shot. Mine went last year on my 1997 and I just bypassed it so know I got nothing, but anyway the 1997- 2003 Malibus were plagued by AC problems.

There are also high and low pressure sensors that are supposed to protect the compressor. I've had both go out on my Caddy last year. Once replaced the compressor worked normally.

I think it's time to visit an auto air conditioner specialist in your area.

Yeah, I guess you are right. I was hoping to try any other self help option first to save some money.

But, does anyone know where that sensor is on the 97 Malibu?

unfortantly I don't know, but you might have some luck asking at www.mpracing.org/forums or www.unitedmalibus.com just because there are alot of 97-03 bu owners over there that have had alot of mechanical experiance with these cars.

Thanks NJ. I'll give it a shot. I have a feeling the heat will eventually drive me to give up and take it to a shop. Fortunately it's in the 80's this week in in NCAL. Nice break. If I get some good advice on those forums I'll be sure to share with the group.
