I am now wondering how accurate the tire pressure readout is on the DIC? I set the pressure to 30 lbs (cold) using an analog handheld tire pressure gauge and now the readout on the DIC indicates from 35-37 lbs! I tend to think that the handheld gauge is fairly accurate, but is it common for the TPMS to be that far off?

Thanks.

Yup.

Redid the tire pressure this morning in the Malibu and although all 4 are at 35 PSI cold they read from 34-38 in the DIC.

When you say "analog" gauge are you meaning the stick gauges? If so, those things are innacurate and you want to use a digital gauge. I use digital and my PSI is usually off by no more than .5 PSI.

Also I hope you guys are taking into consideration that as your driving it'll cause the PSI to go up (do to the tires warming up from friction), so the best way to test whether the system is accurate is to take a reading after driving. That'll give you your most accurate reading between the two.

Would resetting the TMPS maybe fix your issue?

I compare the DIC with a digital gauge. Never more than 1 psi off.

Even if off, the DIC is a great tool. If three tires say 30psi and the fourth says 24psi you know you have a problem.

When I do mine I set them to 33 cold on the gauage then all four read either 34 or 35 on the DIC. I have an anolog dial type guage. Since the readings are basically the same on all four corners I chalked it up to difference in calibration between the TPMS and the guage. The guage I have is the nicest guage sold by Autozone back ten years or so ago. Its been dropped a few times so who knows how accurate that could be.

I set the 30 lbs after the car sat overnight in the garage, and checking the DIC readout before driving anywhere there is a difference of 4-6 psi.

The analog gauge I have is also a dial type, not the stick type. I bought it a week ago and thought that this type of gauge would be more accurate than one with a digital readout. Don't know why, just did.

Oh, one other reason I thought the dial gauge would be more accurate is that the gauge on my 12-volt air pump (cheapie) agrees more with the DIC readout, and I didn't trust the gauge on the air pump!

Just one more question that occurred to me before I put this to rest - why have tires rated at max 44 psi and vehicle manufacturer recommends that they be inflated to only 30 psi? Almost 15 psi below rating seems a bit unusual, no??

Yup. Been brought up plenty of times. The majority of guys here run the LS2s around 34-36 PSI cold.

No problem. A lot of guys find a way better handling, better MPG and just all around better feel with them at that PSI. It puts the tires around 38 PSI when hot.
