my 2015 malibu LT, 2.5 ECO needs a new battery. Getting the correct replacement is easy, but what brand to pick up has me puzzled. Any feedback would be much welcome. thanks. Doug

I am on my 2nd Optima Red Top in my 2011 V6. First one lasted 5+ years and still started the car, but it cranked really slowly. This 2nd one is coming up on 4 years old and has no issues starting the engine at all.

The original battery was SLA - sealed lead-acid.

I buy Walmart/ Sam's batteries. Can't beat the price nor the 12 month warranty. They're just as good as any other I've bought. I used to love optima but they're not what they used to be. -15yr mechanic

I would go to Rock Auto and buy both batteries at the same time. To avoid problems, they must both be changed at the same time and the battery control module reprogrammed at the same time the batteries are replaced. At Rock Auto you can get AC Delco batteries to match the original batteries that came with your Malibu at a reasonable price.

Odessey is the best but costs the most and sizes are limited. Next is Deka / East Penn built batteries. Some east coast WM batteries are EP batteries, will have EP in the serial number.
The rest are Clarios built stuff, more bad news than good with those lines of batteries.

In 2021, my 2014 Malibu's battery was testing at about 50% with my battery tester. Walmart has an AGM
battery for it, but only a few stores carried it. I was told that more of the stores would have the battery.

Looking online, it appears that it's available at even my local Walmart: $169.xx
Plus the Walmart I drove to that had it at the time, installed it in about 20 minutes
(had to wait turn for other customers).

Warranty was 3 years total replacement; prorated up to 5 years IIRC.

I replacement my trunk battery a few weeks later, even though it tested fine.
It's a small AGM battery available at Oreilly store locally (Checkers). My car worked
just fine with the 7-year old battery in the trunk, but I felt it better to replace it after 7 years. Oreilly guy tested it when I took the core back and offered to refund new battery since the old one tested good on their tester. It must be unhooked completely from the before testing.

Be aware the main battery showed various voltages as the system adjusted to the
new battery. Because it was new, the system sometimes acted like it was overcharged
and showed 12.4 volts or so as the car reduced charging so it can determine the
ability of the new battery to power the car (my interpretation of what was happening).
I think the car sees how long the battery can handle the load before dropping to a
voltage too low and then the car starts recharging.

WALMART. They are made by the big battery mfgs at a much better price. The AGM there usually has a 4 yr replacement warranty, and if you have a problem, a wally is always nearby. They record the battery s/n so you don't even need to keep your receipt.
