I have a 2018 Malibu that has auto stop restart function and when it stops at a light it won't restart and the weirdest part is that I have to wait for about an hour or so before it will restart. I have been driving in L-6 and that solves the problem as far as disabling the function but I still can't find a reason why it works fine in L-6 but not in D when the function is active. Anyone have any ideas of what it could be?

The battery is only about a year old. Also why does it always start fine if im driving in L-6 and also why will it restart after about an hour or so if I happen to forget to put in L-6 and have in D which then stops but doesn't restart for about an hour?

It drives fine in L6 because auto stop is disabled in L6. Batteries can be bad or develop a bad cell. You could get it tested but the tests aren't absolute since they are done outside operation conditions. It could also be a loose connection but that is less common.

Im going to have the battery and cables checked and I also heard that their is a fuse near battery that could be problem. I know that L-6 disables the function which is why I'm using but it starts up no problem in the morning or if I stop and restart immediately. Why would it only be problem when I have in D?

The problem is in D because you are driving with electrical demands while charging. You stop, auto stop engages putting full demand on the battery - ECM, BCM, OnStar module, DRL/headlights, wifi router, blower, radio, aux water pump... then it tries to fire the starter and can't. There is a big fuse on the positive fuse block that is cheap. I believe another member on here found it blown. I typically dont recommend that as a common check because of the rarity. Plus it would be an ugly find since you would then need to find how it blew that big fuse or it'll just blow again and again.
