I have a 2000 Malibu and am having some trouble getting my blower motor to work at all speeds. Last year I did some work to it because none of the speeds were working and somehow I got it to work on speeds 4 and 5. Recently the 5th speed stopped working and I'm worried the 4th speed is going to die as well. This can cause me a huge problem because the winter is coming in quick and it gets awfully cold in Vermont. My next step is to get a blower switch from a junkyard but the cheapest I've found is $75.

I would appreciate if anybody has any insight as to what the problem is and where to go about fixing it.

Welcome to the forum.:) I'd start by checking the blower fuse and relay in the engine compartment fuse block on the HI speed problem and the blower resistor assembly (near the blower fan) on the intermediate speeds.

See the wiring diagram at http://cid-54465800aad91b49.office.live.com/self.aspx/pub/va124633.pdf. The 5th or HI setting on the blower switch energizes the blower relay in the engine compartment fuse block. The blower then gets the full battery voltage through the blower fuse. The intermediate speeds are accomplished by the blower switch and blower resistor assembly adding/subtracting resistors in the path of the current.

Have you checked the Blower Motor Resistor?

This is a fairly common problem with GM vehicles of the late 90's early 2000's
They cost about $40 from a dealer and about half that from a generic auto parts store.

My niece's '98 worked on 3, 4, and 5 only. I replaced the resistor and it now works on all settings. Advance Auto Parts- RU872 $17.49.

A piece of advice: although it's not necessary to remove the blower motor to replace the resistor, it does make access a little easier and it's only 3 bolts. One big advantage is that I found a couple of leaves and pine needles stuck in the fins of the squirrel-cage and now the motor is a lot smoother and quieter on the higher speeds.

I recently got a 01 LS and only the highest (5) speed worked on the fan. I replaced the blower motor resistor and voila!
Hardest part is manouvering yourself while working under the dash.

2010 Malibu blower stopped working except on forth speed, replaced resistor and works on two and four speed, replaced again and same thing works on two and forth speeds, have any ideas?
This thread is 4 years old and is in the section for models prior to yours. Please find the correct section (Gen7) and then repost your issue.

I don't know about the newer electronic speed controls but the older resistor coil style would not really reduce voltage until the motor started drawing current. They were more of a current limiter.

As an electrical engineer, I can tell you that an open connection inside the blower motor would make the 14 volts appear at the terminals to the motor no matter what the resistance vale is in line. Basic Ohms law, no current flowing so no voltage drop across the resistance.

You more than likely have a bad blower motor.

I started noticing my AC slowly fading out a month ago. Kicking it helped for awhile, but then it just quit. Fuses are fine, replaced resistor, and it worked great for a week. Now its slowly dying again. On all speeds. High ends up dying in about 10 minutes. Any ideas? Its 110 and I need my AC!!
