Here's the other lingering problem with my car.
When stepdad gave me the vehicle, the ABS system was fritzed. The dealer service center quoted him $1500 or so to replace the ABS controller or whatever, but since neither he nor I ever drive on snow or ice, having it fixed has not been much of a concern.
Whilst doing my recent extensive repairs of the front of the car, I noticed the clever positioning of the sensitive and expensive ABS module directly beneath the battery box. There is a lovely crust of battery acid on the module.
The "brake" indicator light also stays on all the time no matter what. I thought that this was because of the ABS fault, but then I read in my Haynes manual and on this forum that the two lights should be independent, and that the "brake" indicator should only be lit during operation if the parking brake is engaged or the brake fluid level is low.
I tried Starship's suggestion of unplugging the brake fluid level sensor to see if the light went out and it did not.
I wedged myself under the dash, removed the car's brain box, and shot some electrical contact cleaner at the area where the parking brake switch is.
When I get in the car, fasten my seatbelt, start the car and then release the parking brake, the DLR turns the lights on as soon as I take the brake off, so the car somehow knows the brake is off.
I get 3 quick "dings" before the car shuts up and lets me drive in peace.
Am I correct in that the ABS should not be triggering the "brake" indicator?
