Over the past week, my wife and I have noticed a buzzing sound when we are driving our 2008 Malibu. We would best describe the sound as sounding like an ultra-light airplane. The sound goes up and down with the car's speed, and is non existent if the car isn't moving (revving the engine makes no change in the sound). Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Is your radio on or off while this "sound" happens? I had a bad radio in my Silverado and it was the source of a sound just like the one your describing. Only happened while on and at a low volume.

The sound is there whether or not the radio is on. Since it's speed dependent, I'm guessing it has something to do with the drivetrain (wheels, axle, etc.), but more than that I couldn't guess.

Hello.

Was there ever a resolution to this issue? My 2008 LTZ V6 is has the same noise going on right now! Radio, other electronics and AC are all off. Just a buzzing/humming sound that is speed dependent (low frequency sound for slow speeds, higher frequencies at higher speeds)... It seems to be coming from the dashboard area.

Thanks,

Ron

Don't know if it will apply, but I had an electrical short that would manifest itself the same way whether the radio was on or off. The sound was coming from the speakers. Totally speed relative. The higher the speed, the higher the pitch of the sound.

I have a 2008 LTZ V6 too and mine started making the same noise and its driving me crazy. Does anyone know how to fix the issue or know what it is yet?
No response from the OP in 4 months so I'd guess that if we helped him, he took the fix and never came back with the results.

So you have a buzzing coming from under the dash? If the HVAC is turned to OFF, does it still buzz?

Can you feel the buzz in your hands through the steering wheel, in your feet through the floor, or through the seat?

We had a similar issue with ours about a year ago. The sound was speed dependent and did not exist if stopped. Turned out to be the right front wheel bearing and was replaced under warranty at 86000 miles.

The noise is present wether the HVAC is on or off. However ever since I purchased the vehicle the HVAC blower occasionally makes a med/high pitch noise but i got used to quick as it is not that bothersome. But this noise I can hear when the car is going 20+ windows rolled music up 1/3 of the way then if I dont want to hear I turn it up a tad bit more. I have been to 2 dealers they have said they cant hear the issue, I am gonna make an apt with a 3rd today. The closest one to me is 45 min away  . Thanks guys for your help and patience its appreciated

My right front wheel bearing is making this noise at the moment. I thought that this wasn't covered under warranty? I'm at 65000 miles... If it is, I will be a happy camper!

Some of what is covered changed from '09 to '10 so your best bet is to contact your dealer.

@rth3775, I would have to agree with DrivenDaily; get the vehicle into the dealership so they can diagnose what is going on with your Malibu. At that time they determine things in regards to warranty coverage.
