Ok i am repairing this car for someone, his timing chain jumped time and bent all of the intake valves, i got that replaced and had the mechaine shop check the guides. I got a timing chian kit which included, camshaft gears, crankshaft gear, guides and chain. When i turn the engine over with a rachet to double check my timing, it jumps timing, when i turn it, the exhaust camshaft jerks, then their is slack on the chain between both camshafts, then the timing gets off, i just cant figure out the problem, any help would be great thanks, This car is a 2004 chevy malibu with a 2.2 eco tech engine

My first questions are:

1. Did you set the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft correctly?
2. Is it a chain or a belt?
3. Did you have to turn the cam any to get the chain on?
4. Is there a tensioner?
5. Which direction are you turning it - the direction it runs or the opposite?
6. Do you have any pics so our members can possibly see what's going on to better assist you?

It looks like to me that the marks are all lined up properly. I don't know if something is binding or if a tensioner is not engaged and causing the slack. I don't know if this link will help you out at all, but it is the most up to date replacement guide for the timing chain. I don't know too much about engine work, but if I remember I will ask the engine guy at work tomorrow and see if he knows what is going on.

I talked to the guy at work. He told me the tensioner is pressurized by the oil pressure, it is held out by the spring only right now. So, what he said to do is make sure the tensioner is out all the way, the one that is released in step #20 of the installation. As for the timing marks lining up again will not happen unless you turn the engine over many times since the crank gear turns more revolutions as compared to 1 turn of the cam gears. The marks on the chain are only there for installations purposes, so timing is seems to be right.

I took the new tensinor out and put the old one in and it didnt do it anymore the new tensinor didnt have nearly as much spring, as the old one., so i put that one in and it is fine now thanks for the help, do you think if the car runs that i should put the new one in , the old one looked fine though:)

At least you got the issue figured out. If the tensioner had weak spring pressure I probably wouldn't switch back over to the new one. I am not sure if it would cause any issues, but it seems like if it causes slack in the chain like that it will be there on start up every time. I would think it would end up causing noise or excessive wear on the chain.

Gotta have more confidence in the words, instead of if the car runs it should be when the car runs:D, just kidding with you.
