Bought a 2005 Malibu base model with 2.2 engine and a clogged cat (out of warranty), and only place to find replacement is at the dealer. The cat on this model is part of the exhaust manifold, and I was told that the replacement part is for model years 2004-2005 only, and costs $600!

I can buy a running and complete 2006 Malibu very cheaply (has body damage), with the 2.2 engine and I'm wondering if I can swap exhaust systems from the 2006 to the 2005.

Same engine, same base model, same body style, etc.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.:) I think you should be able to do that, i.e., graft the 2006MY exhaust manifold and catalytic converter onto your 2005. They added a secondary air injection valve assembly to add fresh air into the exhaust stream to heat up the catalyst quicker. You can fashion something to block the hole since you obviously don't need it. Go to SaturnFans thread http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161459 and then read the excellent post by PortugalFocus on interchangeability.

I have the same problem with my 2004 Malibu I found the catalytic converter on GM Parts for 400.00 plus 80.00 core charge and 40.00 for shipping which is 100.00 less than dealer ship plus you return old catalytic converter for return of core charge. It will cost me 180.00 less to buy part and have put on......big difference. Here Is the website- www.gm-parts-dealer.com-parts.htm.

Thanks to all who replied. With your help/ideas I believe I can use a different exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. I'll post my results!
