so i was driving along all day perfectly fine, came home around 6 didnt notice anything wrong at all with the car, around 730 i go back to the car to go somewhere and the check engine light pops up and stays up. I shut off the car and put it on again and same thing. So i end up driving anyways and i dont notice anything wrong at all with the car, I get to my destination and i turn the car on and off about 10 times and the light finally goes away. i come home fine again around 8 and i shut off my car. I come back out around 930 and no engine light. so basically my question is do you think something is wrong with my car? or was that just a glitch or somesort? the car has never been tampered. and on another note, i noticed that when the car shuts off i hear a noise that sounds like a belt being pulled through a tight space (thats the best way to describe it) i never noticed it before but it might be normal since i never looked for it before, what do you guys think?

The CEL indicates there is something wrong with an emissions system component. Could be anything from a loose gas cap to a bad O2 sensor or bad catalytic convertor. Usually doesn't mean anything more than you are polluting a little more than the government wants you to. Its covered under the 3/36 warranty and if it is a cat then its covered for 8 years or 80K miles.

The CEL doesn't mean you have a serious engine problem. If the bearings ran dry because you didn't have enough oil in the engine it might bang and make a lot of noise but might not cause the CEL to turn on.

A glitch maybe, on my Malibu I have not had a similar experience but my Silverado is another thing. Driving down the freeway one day I hit a pothole and suddenly the airbag light and check engine light come on. After arriving to my destination and restarting the truck 15 minutes later they did not come back on. No issues since then and had On-Star run a diagnostic and everything came up ok.

Did you run through some puddles? Water can cause the SES light to come on. The only way for it to go away is you have to drive it. The system will dry out after a few drives. Hoped that helped.
