Hello I have a 2005 malibu maxx that two days ago completely lost all steering. While backing out of a parking spot the steering made a nasty snapping noise. I could turn the steering wheel and the front wheels would not budge. So i had the car towed to the dealership where i bought it and they say it is a broken steering gear. The car has 122000 kms on it so is not under warranty. When i asked if that part was covered under a recall he said it is not and will be approximataly $1000 to replace.
I am aware of the power steering recall on these cars in which they will warranty the steering column up until 10 years/100000 miles. So theyll acknoledge its a problem if the steering assist should fail but not if the steering itself fails!?
I am furious at the notion that i should have to pay to fix something that could have killed my wife and I. If it had broken on the highway it very well could have!
If any body can help me out here this would be very much appreciated
