My neighbor's 2000 malibu has a serious issue and we cant figure it out. It will run fine for a while (sometimes hours sometimes a week) then it will die. Not to restart until it cools a bit. It was overheated badly at one point. Replaced heads. Ran good for a while then this started. Replaced crankshaft position sensor and balancer as well. No codes present. Hes ready to junk it. I'd like to fix it. Cam position sensor due to excessive heat?

I think we need more details. I'm not trying to be critical but there are just too many ways to interpret "die," "restart," and "cools a bit." Also, are there any historical or pending codes?

I had a '98 Cavalier 4-cyl. for a couple of months. It would run fine while it was running, but turning it off was a gamble. Sometimes it would start, others not. After a lot of head-scratching and trying different parts (coil, this thing, that thing) I finally discovered that the crank position sensor mounted under the engine was loose. When it backed out too far it wouldn't start, but if it was already running it was fine. I could've just tightened it but since I already had the new part I went ahead and replaced it. 10 minutes! Never did it again.
