Cruise Control Braking

Hello,

I currently own a 2019 Malibu 2.0T

I've put about 5,500 miles on the car since I purchased it new in April. I've noticed that the cruise control regardless of whether it is in adaptive or non-adaptive mode will brake the vehicle when it exceeds the set point by about 2-3 mph. This is very annoying when traveling on hilly roads at about 50 mph. I find myself cancelling the cruise when going downhill and resuming the cruise when I am traveling at the speed I had set my cruise at.

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the cruise braking entirely?

The purpose of cruise control is to maintain a consistent speed, so your criticism of the system slowing itself down to achieve that goal seems odd. I am not aware of a way to modify the way your cruise control functions, and I wouldn't recommend it even if you could.

The cruise control in my 2009 Malibu did not slow the car down at all, and as a result the car would gain more than enough speed downhill to warrant a speeding ticket if I came across a police speed trap. That's a real liability. Not many people want to monitor their speed with cruise control active. I certainly didn't enjoy it back when I was driving a 3-hour road trip a few times a month.
If it would use engine braking instead of the brakes then I'd like it. Using the brakes is just turning momentum into wasted heat. Not a good way to keep it economical, but it does keep Johnny Law off your back.

My Gen7 6-speed does not slow the car at all, but I've found a work-around for that: put it in M and shift down to 5th, 4th, or even 3rd as needed. No brakes, and with DFCO, no gas being consumed.

I did the same thing with manual mode. I would've preferred the car be smart enough to do that, since other cars have been using engine braking in cruise control mode for decades.

When I take the Bu up the hill to my kinfolks, I use manual, going back downhill anywhere since it saves gas in 6th, not 5th and I don't need the engine braking. Not like I have a Jake Brake and 80,000 pounds of freight behind me!

I just let that little doggy roll because I know where all the cops are at. Too predictable for me. :D
