I have a 2006 Malibu lt with the 4 cylinder engine. The engine has stumbled and died twice. The first time was at the credit union. I backed up and the engine died. Today I stopped at a red light and the engine died. I had to let the starter turn the engine over for about 10 seconds before the engine started. Both times the engine was warmed up and the air conditioner was on.

At the grocery store the engine stumbled and almost died as I slowed down to a stop.

It has 51,000 miles. I had the codes checked at Auto Zone and there were no codes.

I've checked the battery and alternator and they are working fine. I've looked for loose connections. The coolant level and oil level are OK.

Are there any TSBs or common problems that would cause the engine to die? It seems like one of those intermittent problems that can be hard to find.

tried a tune up yet? or fuel filter. that would be my first two spots.
+1 also I had a cam sensor go bad in my Cav and it would die somtimes. I don't know if these engines have those anymore but if they do you might look there also. Good luck

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas. Is the fuel filter located in the gas tank?
Are there known problems with the ignition module overheating? The ignition module is attached to the top of the engine where there is a lot of heat. Ford's TFI ignition modules overheated and the engines would stall.

yea the eco kinda had a problem with that. kinda...but it is an expensive option.

fuel filter should be (now this is assuming i am remembering correctly) next to the fuel tank. probably hidden buy the charcoal canister right by the fuel tank. If not follow the fuel lines till you find it. (or google might even be able to tell you)

I had the same problem on my cobalt. Check the throttle body. If there is black gunky stuff in there then that is what the problem is. Go to autozone and get TB cleaner. Make sure to remove it and spray it. Clean it with a good clean rag.

From my experience, The guys at the local AZ are clueless.
Did you try cleaning the IAC? This is a common problem with many cars.

Most new cars don't have an IAC because the throttle itself is electronicly controlled. But yes, this was a common problem with the IAC in the TB on cable direct TB's.

MAFs that have issues will cause this also.

If you can find someone (a buddy) etc that is into performance and has a good trace tool like EFILive, then you should be able to track it down quickly.
