I just started to notice that when I turn my headlights on my gage lights dim, but when I turn them off the lights getter brighter. Is that common?

I thought all cars did that. It's more noticeable on the Malibu with the gages set in deep pockets.

The lights are brighter during the day so you can see them better (due to the sun blinding you). They are dimmer at night because your eyes are more sensitive and it makes it less distracting.

The ambient light sensor thought it was dusk and turn on your headlights, thus dimming your dash lights. :)

If you find this dimming to be distracting, turn that little knob on the dashboard (left side of the steering column) all the way clockwise. It may not dim anymore, but you'll have an arcade game in front of you at night. ;)

The lighting will always dim when the lights come on regardless of the position you put the brightness knob at.

If you want it to stay fully-bright.. you'll have to leave your headlights off but some people might say that's dangerous at night.

Funny thing.... My friend took my flashlight and kept it on the ambient light sensor at night. I was shocked at how bright the daytime running lights really are. Thery lit up the road decently. The light output was that of a car from the 70's. Not a whole lot, but it still lit up the road. lol

Ohh true true if you do a flashlight haha I was just thinking of using the switch and turning it off..

I have no idea why someone wouldn't want the panel to dim.. I tried one time leaving them on full and I was blinded and crashed and died on my way to panera bread..

Bless you all amen golly gee whiz I like a tall with protein caffe-vanialla frappuccino with whipped cream incase you're a starbucks barista.

I got question about the door handle lights.
Is there supposed to be one on the passenger's side that lights up? My driver's side does but the passenger side stays dark.

Don't get me started talking about baristas. My trash guy still picks up rubbish even if you call him a sanitation engineer. A barista still pours a cup of coffee even if you call them a barista, and most likely they'll get your order wrong besides. Give me good ol Dunkin Donuts where they can get your order wrong without the attitude. I order a medium black regular coffee no matter where I go, no matter what those pompous overrated coffee pourers call it.

The passenger door handle should light up as well.

Thanks for the answer.

Does it light up all the time or does somebody have to be sitting in the seat, or have the seatbelt latched or something?

I think I need to check mine out a little more closely.

Bring it back to the dealership and tell them to fix it and if they don't then you want a replacement LTZ with every available option. Your two front door handles, as well as the two overhead lights should be illuminated when your headlights are turned on.
