Hey guys, my wife and I just purchased our new 2009 Malibu 1LT. The dealer of course offered an extended warranty on the bumper to bumper coverage for about $900.

Now in the past, I have always figured those warranties were worth nothing because the dealer wouldn't honor anything.

What do you guys think? I bought this car based on it's reputation, safety and features (OnStar, etc.). I'd like the peace of mind but do you think the factory upgrade in warranty is worth the cost?

Thanks for any opinions/experiences.

Honestly and personally I would extend all the warranties that are offered. Maybe not all, but the bumper to bumper for sure. You can never be too careful. Wouldn't you rather be saying "Thank god I got the extended warranty" instead of "I should have gotten that extended warranty"?

That's me though. The Malibu is a very reliable and safe car, but who knows what the road will do. Get it and play it safe.

you can always get it once your 3 year 36 is up--remember that if you purchase it now--the first 3 years are useless because you already have a warranty--

Get a GM extended warranty, not an aftermarket one. Definitly worth it if something goes wrong. Spend $1500 on one for my grand am and ended up having over $4K worth of repairs done.

Thanks guys, I think I will buy one.

Now, it's my understanding that I can purchase any time while under factory warranty, correct? I may just wait until closer to expiration of the bumper to bumper before I do.

Is it correct that I can wait a while?

That is correct. You have until your factory warranty expires. Just make sure it is a GM Protection plan and not some after market plan. As you are aware you can raise the deductible to reduce the cost. Believe the plan comes in $50, $250, $500 and $1000 deductibles. Something else to consider is the fact that the warranty is transferrable (small fee) should you decide to sell the car. Good selling point. You might check the link for further info:

Good point, I'm pretty sure I'll purchase the extended warranty...new cars are pretty expensive to repair, my tranny went on my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP under warranty and the repair cost was over $3,500.

I think in most cases extended warranties are a waste of money and you will not get your money back in repairs. But if it gives you peace of mind then maybe it's worth the money.

A couple years ago I was looking at purchasing an extended warranty for an in-warranty POS Buick I had. I recall that the price went up the longer I waited. I can't remember if the price change was based on calendar time or mileage at the time of buying the GM Protection Plan.

I'll look into it for my Malibu LTZ because I plan on keeping this vehicle for a looong time.

For $900 Id take it and run. Our dealer wouldnt go lower than $2100 for the extended bumper to bumper so I said screw you and Ill go to another dealer. Ill just get it before the original 3yr/36k is up.
