First of all, it wasn't my car but my son and daughter-in-law's car. They drive a 2009 Pontiac G6 that they bought a little over a year ago that was formerly a daily rental. The car had about 45,000 km (28,000 miles) when he bought it. The bumper to bumper expires in 60,000 km in Canada. He has about 63,000 km on the car now so the bumper to bumper warranty expired a few months ago.
He had taken it in for a few small things over the year that he had it but nothing major. I rusty seal around the trunk, a rough idle and not much else.
He brought the car over to the house Friday last week after the brakes started making noise. We did the front brakes. That went well as all he needed was pads.
When it was here he asked me to look at the back door which wasn't locking or unlocking with the power locks. After a little research it seems as though the door lock actuators can get water in them and they stop working. About a $70 part online. The G6 uses the same actuators as the Malibu and from what I have read on this forum the Malibu has the same issue with door locks.
When he pulled the car out of the garage, there was an oil spot where he had parked. The steering rack was leaking. He said the steering had been uncharacteristically stiff the last few weeks. He said that there was a noise in the front end as well when he went over bumps and the wiper switch wouldn't always go into the intermittent unless you held it in position.
I felt sick as Chris and his wife are just starting out as they were married just a year ago and are expecting their first child in a months time. A lot of unexpected expenses at this time, they don't need.
On top of all that, he needs to get tires for the car. That is to be expected as that, along with the brakes are considered normal wear items.
I called the salesman at the dealership which happens to be a Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer. He hadn't been there long as he came from a Pontiac dealer a few miles away that closed. I have dealt with this salesman for over 20 years. I asked if there was anything the dealer could do as the warranty had expired and there was no obligation on either GM or the dealers part to do anything to help.
He suggested going to the service department and basically laying all out on the line. Chris did just that and he asked if there was anything that they could do. "Bring the car in tomorrow so we can look at it", they said. That was yesterday.
He came over today in the early afternoon with the good (Great!) news. GM and the dealer were covering ALL of the repairs. They fixed a few things today and what they couldn't fix today they ordered parts for.
I can tell you one thing for sure, I'll bet that GM has a customer for life there. Lord knows that the General has been far from perfect over the years but they really stepped up to the plate on this one.
Kudos to GM and my dealer for taking care of my son and his family.
