Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with their door latches , I've have the two rear door latches replaced and recently I noticed when closed my door at the bank and locked it I came back out and my door was open... I seen the door closed but when I hit the lock button it popped it open a bit. It didnt always do this sometimes when closed it would just bounce back. ANyway a family member borrowed it and I told him about the issue to watch for it till I get it in for service and when he returned the drivers door would not open from the inside or the outside even tried locking and unlocking..anyway he had to bring it to the dealer where they finally got him out and said it was a common issue with the chevy malibu.

all said and done they replaced the drivers side and now ordering a part for the passenger...kind of a big safety issue when you can't get out of your car... especially when you can't bend your legs over the console or jump around in it....like i said just wondering if anyone else had this issue.

Mine had a similar issue straight off the showroom floor. But then again, it was a dealer trade and had 1252 miles on it. The driver's door would open and close, but closing required it to be slammed and it wasn't smooth like the other three. They replaced the latch, but it was not a good experience overall. The cause was discovered as some piece of plastic interfering with the bolt on the body. All the rest of the doors have always functioned as they should.

When you see the tech the next time, ask him why it's common. We might be able to go to our cars to see if there's any sign of this common issue and then prevent or forestall it. As one of our presidents once said, "Trust, but verify."

Had to have the driver's door latch replaced on our '08 after about a year. The door either would just bounce back off the latch & not close or when it would close, often, if you were inside then you'd be stuck unless someone was around outside to pull on the handle & tug the door. Mom had a few fun days getting stuck in her car;)

The latch was defective in some form, and replaced quickly. Never an issue afterwards or with any other door.

I had a similar problem with the drivers door of my 2008 Buick Allure/LaCrosse. It happened when I sort of flicked the inside door release without moving it properly. The door would just bounce off the striker bolt rather than latching. My simple cure, just move the locking indicator up and down manually a couple of times and the problem is corrected.

Yeah my door was pretty much the same it wouldn't latch and then it would if you slammed it and also if it did latch if you locked it, it would pop open again so watch out for that too , I took it in and they replaced the drivers and waiting on part for passengers , the rear latches were replaced long ago.

Has any of you had similar circumstances of how your cars were treated? Ie. Location (weather wise) have it sitting outside, or something else you might have in common? I have had a few trucks, regarding this situation, a 2002 and 2004 Jeep Gr. Cherokee, and a GMC yukon. On these vehicles water/ice would get past the window and freeze my latches. I would have to service my latches and re-oil them so they would continue to work properly. Has anyone noticed any signs of water in the door cavity?

I have not had this problem occur yet. And in the past me car has been left outside and driven daily.

Had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago.

I tried to close the driver's door from the inside, and it bounced back open. Did that a couple of times. I checked that nothing seemed to be in the way, such as the seat belt. Then, I closed it a little harder, and that was it -- the door closed, but I couldn't open the door from either the inside or outside.

It was a pain to have to climb over the center console and out the passenger's side. Since it was a Saturday afternoon and service was already closed, I had to wait till Monday to make an appointment. They fixed it in about an hour on Tuesday. They said they replaced the lock, not the door hinges.

That's my first significant issue with the car, bought new June '09

Bought my '09 2LT in Dec '08. Jan '09 the driver's door wouldn't close or open smoothly. Took it in and they replaced the driver's latch assembly. Never an issue with that, but in July '10 the driver's door lock failed and they replaced the actuator. That was also when they told me they wouldn't cover it again and then told me to never come back. Some dealer, eh? Breaks something every time they work on my car and than has the gall to tell me I'm too critical. HUH??? You break, I say no - that's critical? Not!

Dpopeck,

I read about your situation that you experienced with your 2009 Malibu. I am glad that you were able to get the problem taken care of.

In the future, don’t hesitate to contact me if you need something.

DrivenDaily,

That is aweful that you were treated like that by the dealership. Did you happen to contact General Motors and have this documented? Did you happen to find another dealership that treats you the way you should be treated?
