Can someone explain how to post a photo that will display full size with the text here, instead of showing up as a thumbnail or a separate link?

OK, do I understand correctly? Instead of uploading a photo directly to this forum I have to post the image to a sharing website and then post the link to that image here?

You can do both. You can upload to the site as well and then link to that hosted photo from the site in your post.
