Just wondering if anyone has installed an aftermarket stereo themselves? If so, can you (1) tell me what it takes to get the old one out and (2) and most important, what is the correct wiring harness that will still retain onstar function? I looked on crutchfield and it says GMOS-LAN-03, but I cannot find anywhere that says this harness is actually for an 08-10 malibu. I plan on purchasing this on ebay because it is only about $75 but I really don't want to purchase the wrong thing. If anyone knows for sure, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks everyone!

Same here, I purchased the same thing for my '09. As Ktrace35 said, you will retain Onstar and all sounds except the turn signal click. However, you can also purchase another module that connects to the GMOS-LAN-03 that will give you your turn signal click back.

festo702,

if you are putting in a single din radio you would use a metra dash kit 99-3302 and the double din kit is a 95-3302 and the correct harness is a metra wire harness gmos-lan-03. if you have a best buy in your area or maybe one of the local stereo shops may have one, if not call audio one in tn and they will drop ship any and everything you would need, 931-431-3900 ask for a guy named jay.

Anyone know what it takes to get the factory radio out of the car? Do you have to take the dash apart or is it easier than that? Thanks for everyone's help so far.

Wow, this looks like the easiest install I've done. Thanks for the link! Now, does anyone know what wire i hook up to, to get the steering wheel controls working with my new stereo? Im getting the PAC SWI-PS Steering control interface and it looks like I will just have to hook up to 1 wire (can anyone confirm this) but I am not sure which wire that will be and where I can find it. Thanks

Ok, Ive been reading this and come with questions. I want to be able to stream music via bluetooth to my stereo. I have an 09 2LT, so I have BT and Onstar and XM, but not for music. If I get an aftermarket stereo, with bluetooth capabilities, can I set it up so the Onstar and XM work, and send text to the new stereo as it does now? Can I also set it up so the Bluetooth phone functions as it does no both with audio and visual displays (and the steering wheel controls) while simultaneously being able to stream mp3s from my phone via Bluetooth to the stereo?

You can do all of the above. The only problem is that you will have to have a separate module for the OnStar, XM and steering wheel controls. So if you are willing to pay, you can play(so to speak). I have an after market in-dash GPS that has bluetooth, bluetooth audio and OnStar. It has XM capabilities, but I opted not to go that route.

I only have a 1LT (no OnStar, XM, bluetooth). I want to add an aftermarket double din deck and want to keep my steerign wheel controls. 2 questions, im assuming i dont have to purchase the expensive harness cause i dont have all the bells and whistles? and will this swi-ps interface work for me also?

You actually might need the same harness because it retains the warning chimes also and it has an output to add a relay so you still get a clicking noise when you turn on your turn signals, I'm not sure if you can find a cheaper one that does that. Also, the factory steering wheel controls can be retained, but you have to purchase the correct unit according to the brand of deck you put in. I believe the swi-ps is only for pioneer and sony, hence the "ps". You will also need an antenna adapter and a double din mounting kit. Hope this helps you.

let's say i'm superbly annoyed by the turning sin gle clicks and installing a eclipse d30 into my 09 ls. Can I buy a std. harness and call it a day? i've read that i'd lose the power after turning off the car and the dings.. but that's fine for me.

You will only get the clicking if you add a relay to the harness. I believe that you could go with a cheaper harness and be ok, but you will lose all your warnings (like if you leave your keys in the ignition). You will also lose onstar and probably your bluetooth (if you have it). I found my GMOS-LAN-03 harness on Ebay for $75 so I dont know how much you can save with a different harness. But, you might want to do it the right way and still have your warning chimes.

No one said stereo install was going to be cheap. For me, i have not gone that route on replacing my HU. The reason is i have not found a DDin to my liking. I've used single din excelons in the past rides of mine. I've been happy with kenwood. I'm just waiting for a nice model in DDin. Don't get me wrong, they make excelon DDin. I just don't want to spend 1K on a HU right away. I'm the type of guy that does his homework by searching for reviews about a type of product before i go and buy it.

BAM!.. i installed for 30 bucks. bought the matching harness antena adapter and kit. pop off the shifter top plate. then work up until the screws from the radio and a/c show. take them off and the radio slides down and out! I did lose the turning single, the seat belt, and low gas chime... but like i said before i find all three to be very annoying.
