Once you have the car raised look for a frame member to lower it onto the jackstand. Before removing the jack completely shake the car a little to be certain that once it's resting on the jackstand(s) it won't wander off and damage the car or you while you're under it.

When I work under a car I lower the car onto the stand(s) and leave the jack there unless it's in the way of the work. When I worked at NEC in Roseville, CA, there was a guy who was on the safety committee who had his car fall on him at home. He wasn't using jackstands. He died.

If the top of your jack has a saddl with a slot in it then it is made to jack the car by using the seam just under the side between the wheels. It's where two portions of the car meet and are welded.

If you're using a floor jack then just like the jackstands, choose a frame member that is sturdy enough to lift the car without causing any dents.

my jack is like this

i wish the malibu had the towing tabs the corollas have, it's the easiest to use jacking point ever. i am scared of scratching or bending the sub-frame on the malibu =[

You can use the pivot points for the front suspension as jacking points. Jack on one and put the stand on the other.
