You can replace the LED's with good soldering skills, but it would be a lot easier to replace the switches.

would have to take the switches apart to install new LEDs? all i can find in looking for the parts are the switches, noting about a board or panel behind them. is this a contained unit that just plugs in to a wire harness?

As mentioned above, with LEDs to illuminate them you'll have to de-solder them and solder in the replacements. For incandescent bulbs you'll probably have to use solder as well. To get to the LED or bulb you'll have to disassemble the switch, then service it, then reassemble it. If you're not hip to doing that kind of detailed work then just replace them.
