I have the same problem with a navy blue 2016 Chevy Malibu. If anyone wants to put together a class action I’m in. 🤨
I had the same problem with my dark blue 2016 Malibu. First noticed it about 1 to 1 1/2 years ago. Car was not even 4 yrs old! I never brought it to a mechanical car wash, but did have it detailed a couple of times. Thought maybe they did it when they waxed it. A couple of weeks agobi saw the same car with the same exact problem. Almost thought it was my car at first. Additionally, there us a spot about the size if s quarter where the paint has completely come off and is starting to rust, at about 4 1/2 yrs old! I have a 13 yr old Saturn with no paint issues. I have not seen this in any vehicle I have ever owned.

I just bought my Malibu used. When I looked at it at the dealership it was fine so I signed all the paperwork including an as is form. Then 3 months later I noticed the same issues with my hood trunk and roof. If the carwash damaged the paint then why are the sides fine? My dealer's body shop told me to go through my insurance and I tried. No I don't know what to do. If you are going to start a class action suit, I am in. I am furious that I am paying so much money for a car that looks so bad.

Yes I'm in. I think k if we get enough people we can fight this. Why should we have to pit out the money for their cheapness. This is my 3rd malibu and 1st problem

So GM still can’t paint cars reliably, huh? Reminds me of my Aunt’s 1990 Olds Calais. Bought brand new, the paint cracked, crazed, then literally came off the car in large chips! GM repainted it for her (as part of some kind of Goodwill” program or TSB), but it happened again later on!

My 2002 Impala has had several spots (7-10) where the paint has just flaked off, leaving just the very solid gray primer underneath showing. This started many years ago. And they’re big spots, too! I’ve just sanded and painted them myself. Nothing lasts forever, and as long as the metal is not rusting, that’s all I care about.

The nose of my 2011 Equinox also had paint flake off, but I would put a LeBra on the vehicle for two weeks twice a year during my long-haul trips, so I blamed it on that ... but still - the paint looks awfully thin in this area! I stopped using the Bra a year or so ago, sanded and painted, but the flaking has continued. Might have to repaint the hood on this one!

Had another thought recently about this: I grew up in the Northeast where it snowed just about every winter. My father always had one (actually several) of those big clunky “brooms” (with the awful plastic scraper on the other end) that were sold to clear snow and ice from vehicles. He’d be out there scrubbing that broom all over the body getting all the snow off before he left the house. After I got married and moved away I’d always make at least two annual trips up to see them, and in the Winter of 2011 I drove my brand new Equinox - and MA got a pretty good snowstorm on that trip. There he was - out there sweeping all the snow off my Equinox with that awful “broom”! Made me cringe!

I think these “brooms”, together with the snow and ice itself, can damage paint like what is shown in the pictures above - because when I hand-washed my parents cars in the Summers I’d always see this kind of thing on them - usually on the flat, horizontal panels (especially the roof). It was on every car he owned, and I attributed it to his use of that “broom” in the Winters, and always scrubbing off the snow right down to the paint!

And if it scratches my paint up it’ll just remind me of my Dad... (tears)

That is the worst I have seen. Usually I see pics that are not great but I have to zoom and squint to see the complaint. That's pretty awful you can see the swirl lines clearly.

That’s only the hood, it’s on the hood and trunk. I’m embarrassed to drive the car it looks like someone’s little beat up car. My friend has a red 16’ Malibu and hers is the same thing just not as bad as mine yet …

Ive seen several darker colors around me locally that show the obvious scratches like yours. The odd thing is some dark blue and black don't have it and some do. Like some batches were just too soft.

My paint looks virtually new so for what it’s worth I use Turtle Wax clean & shine & Meguiar’s quick wax afterwards about 10 times a year & go to a brushless car wash like maybe twice in winter

As does mine. I still feel bad for those that got bad luck, bad car washes, whatever the cause.

Definitely some dull or depleted clear coat. Looking at your pics I see another issue: cracked upper brake light. I'm not sure of your current location but if you get any rain it will probably leak.

No paint issues on my fleet listed in my signature line. No paint issues in many prior GM vehicles either. Rock chips do not count.
IMO it's all about how the exterior is cared for. Some vehicles had in the past issues of paint peeling off due to lack of adhesion to the primer. For example, some Express vans had that issue in the past.

THIS IS SO SAD. I'VE HAD SOO MANY CARS OVER THE YEARS AND NEVER HAVE THERE BEEN A PAINT ISSUE. EVERYTHING EVERYONE IS SAYING IS HAPPENING TO ME. I TOTALLY TAKE CARE OF MY CAR INSIDE AND OUT ALL THE TIME. I JUST CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT IS HAPPENING. I'VE VERY UPSET WITH THIS CAR SO MUCH BECAUSE OF MECHANICAL ISSUES AND NOW THE PAINT. CHEVY KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM AND SHOULD HELP. I'VE STOPPED AND TALKED TO SO MANY OTHER THAT HAVE MALIBU CARS AND THEY HAVE THE SAME ISSUES AS WELL. THEY TELL ME THAT THEY WAX AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CARS AS WELL TOO. I'M IN ON THE CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT IF IT HAPPENS. RAY

@campb292

Thanks for the feedback, I had the car compounded and polished last August. It turned out to look just like @Lalaa561 's pictures in post #25. Oh so that's why the water seeps in to the headliner. My current location is Dubai. Albeit it's not too rainy, I did not notice the cracked light. A big thank-you for bringing that to my attention! 😊
