Just wondering if anyone else has/had this issue and what did you do? Is GM stepping up to fix it
Welcome @Sharon8309. I moved your new discussion in the Auto Industry/GM News section to the existing discussion.

Answer is yes, over the last couple years this forum has seen a couple dozen reports as you can see here. GM won't be doing anything unless it occurs under warranty or rust through develops under warranty. Even warranty could be tough as they could claim abuse or neglect. It isn't a safety thing so will never be a recall.

There are some existing lawsuits involving the 2015-2019 Tahoe, Suburban, Silverado, Yukon, and Sierra but I haven't seen the Malibu added yet. There had been a class action lawsuit for the potential of the pedal position sensor failing causing an accident but that lawsuit was recently dismissed. These things take a long time and rarely get tangible results for the consumer. Always possible. You could search the web and find the attorneys currently handling the existing lawsuit and see about getting yourself added as the Malibu owner Plaintiff.

2016 and later Malibu Defective Paint Job warrants a class action lawsuit. I tried to work with GM to correct a defective paint job called “checking.” by auto body paint shops. GM refused to resolve it!

I found a class action lawsuit currently underway regarding GM trucks and SUVs in that same timeframe and trying to get Malibus enjoined in that suit. Waiting to hear back. I’d encourage y’all to reach out to Steve Jackson 205-966-3682! I have no connection to him, but I pulled his name off the pending lawsuit. I’d like him to know there’s others out here with same issues. I’ve seen a couple people here try to defend GM, saying that these issues were caused by car washes. Either they don’t know what they’re talking about, or I’d suspect they’re working for GM. I’ve pretty much always owned a GM, but I’m not happy with the customer service response on this. They’re too many complaints out there on these paint jobs to say it’s insignificant!!

Hi everyone same issue here as original post but on a cadillac escalade 2016.
I have contacted the dealer and gm directly they gave me a 3500 estimate for repair and gm offered a 35% discount. Obviously not acceptable since this is a known issue with gm cars of certain years therefor I have contacted a class action law suite attorney anyone interested just chime in.
FYI statue of limitation is 6 years from discovery.
I am interested if u have an attorney. I have also reached out to an atty named steve Jackson in Alabama (I believe), and waiting to hear back from him.

@Karl300 Post moved to existing discussion.

Some cars have issues, it doesn't mean all cars have issues. That doesn't mean owners without issues "don't know what they're talking about" or are conspiring with GM. There are variables in play. There might be batch variations, paint color variations, differences in cleaning practices, garaged or not, etc. Consider this a warning regarding impugning other members for sharing their experience.

I hope you are able to get some relief on your paint or clearcoat issues someday.

So my 2018 Malibu LS with 115,000 miles had nearly flawless roof paint 3 months ago. This is today. Garage kept for first 3 years. I’ve never seen paint disintegrate this rapidly on anything I’ve owned, and I’ve owned 9 GM vehicles over the years. I bought my daughter a used 2014 Sonic that had same damage, but it was used when I bought it and had the damage. My Malibu I bought new March 2018. Very frustrating. Car sees a lot of use but I’ve babied the interior and exterior.

I was searching online to see if anyone else was having this issue.. looks like a bunch of people. I have a 2016 black Malibu and clear coat is completely gome on hood, roof, and trunk. The side panels are also chipping. I love my Malibu, it’s perfect inside. I’m so embarrassed with the look of it I don’t drive it much now.

Hello has anyone successfully gathered the complaints regarding the top coat? I am running into the same issue.
Working on it 24/7 right here. We've got evidence/pictures of this happening on 7 cars now! Add yours and we'll have 8!

Glad mine's silver. Paint and coat look new on my 2018!
My 2016 is white and seems totally fine. It's my first white car and it wasn't my top choice. I wanted the Nightfall Gray or Blue Metallic but no one had them in stock around here. Dodged a bullet on that one. Still, what few pictures we have seen doesn't look good. Color choice shouldn't mean your car looks like a 90's Geo Prizm because you bought a dark color. There are still some actions pending on GM trucks and SUVs but it stalled when an extension was filed last May. Regardless, Malibu isn't part of that because no one has stepped up to be the plaintiff or class rep.

Lord have mercy, I have a 2016 Chevy Malibu LS. My car paint is scratched up and fading tremendously on the top, hood, and the trunk!!! It looks horrible. I have noticed other Malibu's with the same issue. I am going to get my car repainted in a couple of months because of this. The company should really look into doing something about the cheap and unprofessional paint job that has been done to the cars. If anyone have any luck please advise and keep us all posted. Thank you.
