I got a error code on my 08 malibu that says something is wrong with my evap purge/vent. I want to locate it to see if I can change it out myself. Where is the EVAP PURGE/VENT located on my 2008 Malibu LS?

The EVAP PURGE/VENT should be located under the vehicle back by the fuel tank. Its not the large box that will be back there but a smaller one that will have 2 hoses attached to it.

What exactly is the code? EVAP purge and vent are two different operations. The purge solenoid is on top of the engine, near the firewall (follow the EVAP purge tube that runs next to the fuel line up the firewall). The vent solenoid, on the other hand, is on top of the fuel tank on your Malibu.

P0446 is generically defined as Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit. Since the ECM on your Malibu can tell a short or open circuit on the EVAP vent control circuit, it really means there's something wrong with the performance of the vent solenoid valve and perhaps the air line between the valve and the EVAP canister. See http://cid-54465800aad91b49.office.live.com/self.aspx/pub/EVAP%20canister%20and%20vent%20solenoid.gif. It shows the removal of the EVAP canister and the EVAP canister vent solenoid (cylindrical component connected to the larger canister) from the driver side of the fuel tank after the fuel tank has been lowered.

This sounds like a complicated issue for someone with no experience with cars. Should I just look to take it to a professional?

I think that's a good idea not to tackle it yourself. It could be an electrical problem (solenoid or wiring) or mechanical problem (valve or restricted line). The vent solenoid valve is located where it is to keep it away from the elements but then it's not easy to service. The good news is that it's usually not something that's going to affect the driveability and thus you can take your time finding a reputable shop.

Are you sure it's the vent solenoid that's bad? Attached to the fuel tank, right side, about the size of a soup can. You'll need to drop the tank down a bit to get it out. Purge is under the hood and would depend on what engine you have as to exact location. You've ruled out the fuel cap already?

i replaced the gas cap already and i replaced the purge solenoid under the hood because the resistance for the old one seemed to be low enough to be bad. The light is still on though so i guess ill have to drop the tank now. Its only 20 bucks shipped from rock auto but im gonna check the dealer tomorrow to see how much it is. I kinda need this thing now.

Since someone else revived this thread, I have a related question. I have the same same problem and replaced the gas cap, Vent solenoid AND purge solenoid. The check engine light is still on. Does anyone have any idea what else could be the problem?

Check Engine Light on with Code C0443 and Purge Control Valve replaced in September 2012 for $183.

August 2013 Check Engine Light on again. Dealer repaired open circuit in wiring going to vent valve and replaced Gas Cap for $210.

2 weeks later Check Engine Light on again with Code P0455. Dealer ran Smoke Test and found hose on Purge Solenoid on Engine was half way off and leaking. Reinstalled and No Charge.
