Hi everybody. My names Justin I'm an 18 year old going back to get my HS Diploma. I just got my Malibu today. I was planning on flipping it but I really like it for some reason. Maybe I'll drive it through school? Anyways on to the car; I sold my old 89 Jeep Cherokee for 700 bucks. I got my Malibu for only 500. Its an LS so power everything, alloy rims, interior and exterior in almost perfect condition. Only 183,XXX miles. A mechanic told the person I bought it from that the intake manifold gasket went out, and quoted them 1500 bucks. I checked it out no leaks from the head or intake. They said it was just blowing out of the resivour cap. So I just put some stop leak in there. Because they said it was losing coolant, and starting to overheat. Gave them 500 cash, and drove off. Never overheated I was expecting to have to put a new gasket it. I've drove around all day and the needle stays in the middle. So I think maybe it was a stuck thermostat, and the stop leak loosend it up. It only has two issues. When the gas tank is low like below a half a tank. I'll go around a cornor and the gauge will drop to empty and stay there till I turn the car off and on. The other thing is the lights are always on. I'm not talking about DRL's. Taillights and all are on. When ever they key is switched, and the fog lights always need to be turned back on. So any info on those would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to the site, Justin!

I had a '97 Grand Prix that wanted to turn the running lights on all the time, too. I found the 10A fuse for DRLs and pulled it. Apparently the module died and was telling the system to turn them on all the time. Either that or the light sensor died and the default was to turn them on. Either way, pulling the fuse put me back to a fully manual system. Problem solved. Yours may act the same way. Can't hurt to try, eh?

If your fog light switch is "soft", meaning it doesn't physically click into an On or Off position, then it's like our Gen7 Malibu's. Whenever the key is turned off the fogs are turned off and stay off. When the lights come back on again the fogs have to be turned on manually. Again. PITA!

Search around about the overheating issue or the intake gasket. If you have the 3100 you'll want to know as much as possible before taking on any repairs.

Sounds like you got a pretty decent car for the money, too! Congrats!
