New Malibu Needs Improvement.

Well, I really want to like this car. It looks great but it just falls short once you get behind the wheel. My 2008 4 cyl LTZ suffers from the following.

Intermittent power steering failures.
Squeaky Brakes
Over steer
Overall poor Handling

Surprisingly I won't complain about power because this 4cylinder is adequate when mated to the 6 speed.

I just wish that a car that looks as good as these new malibus do would be a bit more competent in the Handling department. Anybody have any luck improving the Handling of their vehicles?

Oh, and what is it about GM cars and their front lower valance. They do know that people drive these cars in the real world and don't want to scrape their front end on everything right?

I think Malibus have pretty good handling. What are you comparing it to? I've driven the previous generation Malibu, the current generation Malibu, a Mazda 6, a Nissan Altima, a G6, a Taurus, and probably one or two others for 500+ miles. The Malibu has good handling compared to these cars.

Also, Car and Driver chose the 2008 Malibu as a "10 best" and commented that they thought the Malibu had good handling.

It could be your expectations are a bit too high? What was your previous car?
Our Malibu has FAR better handling then I could ever dream. Ive pushed it a little bit and it preformed very well.

It also rides very well when comparing it to my Formula and is perhaps the quietest car Ive been in a long time.

The front bumper gets scratched on curbs in parking lots because people pull way too far forward. There is no need to have your front tires on the curb. My wife has done it once and learned since but it damaged the bumper cover.
squeaky brakes are a gm standard. the joke was always that they are made from "pot metal"
If the brakes are squeaking and you are a DIY maintence man then get some brake grease and apply it to the back side of the pads that face the calipers. Solves 99% of the noise problems with new GM vehicles because they ship them with zero grease.

while this is a great idea....if you are going to take it all apart...throw the stock brakes away lol
Valid points, though at least regarding handling, the car isn't a Vette but it's definitely near the top of the midsize sedan class in regards to ride/handling, if not the best. Wheels and tires can affect this, and possibly your '08 LTZ-4's 17's are one issue, as well as the electric steering on 4-cyl models is quite light. That said, it's a very tossable, crisp car, overall with the right tires and such--even if, perhaps, the smooth ride and quietness skew the perception, after a while.

Otherwise, too, the front valance. That's an "every car" thing almost, and specific to spoilers, air dams, and such underneath the main fascia, that's all about aerodynamics and mpg's in relation to them. Smooths underbody airflow, and isn't just there to be a nuisance.

The next gen Malibu is actually, well, quite far along in design. One new vehicle that gives a lot of ideas about what it will offer is the new '10 Buick Lacrosse, of which it will share the Epsilon II platform with. Think Direct Injection 4-cyl's and V6's only, still FWD but with optional AWD, all new electronics in conjunction with a new interior design where it's all more integrated (again, look at the center stacks of the new Equinox, Lacrosse, etc. for an idea), and more. Potentially not a huge styling departure, given the success of the current looks and the V1.0 platform it's already on, but that has yet to be seen. It was actually supposed to be out sooner rather than later, with the current car having a short run despite being so thoroughly re-done, but of course, with the financials and such, there were better ideas and product choices to make in the meantime.

We'll see. Still, any suggestions and comments are very valid to make...we do drive these vehicles daily, so it's the best real world R&D to report back on.
