My 2000 3.1L Malibu over heated one day on the interstate and shut off. It has not started since. It has spark, compression, air, and fuel. I tried to spray starting fluid in the intake and turn it over, but it won't catch a lick. I have changed the coil packs with no success. I tested the crank position sensor and it checks out fine. I checked the valve timing and all is fine. The only thing I can think of is ignition timing. Any help would much be appreciated.

Can you tell if it slipped a tooth on the timing? Does it even sound like it's trying to fire, like "poofs" out the exhaust, or some kind of backfire?

If the timing jumped a tooth (or more) then the cam's running late, letting all the compressed air/fuel mixture out before its time. (Crank turns belt, belt drives cam. If it jumped a tooth then the crank was turning but the cam wasn't, putting it in ahead of the cam.)

If it's chain-driven then it still could have jumped a tooth, but it's less likely than with a belt.

The valve timing is right. It does nothing but turn. When I spray starting fluid in the intake, it still does nothing. It sparks, but I wonder if the ignition timing is off. I have no way to test that.
