I need to purchase an oil filter for my parents 2008 Malibu 2.4L 4 cylinder. When I Google it, I see two different types. A paper filter and one with a metal canister. Which type of filter should I purchase and is there a preferred brand?

2004 thru 2014 Malibu with 2.4L 4 cyl.
Should be the paper filter and gasket.
AC Delco PF457GO

or, if you want to replace the plastic cap;
AC Delco PF458G

What would be the purpose of getting the AC Delco PF458G and replacing the plastic cap, instead of just going with the AC Delco PF458GO?

When my 2012 Malibu with 2.4L 4-Cyl had 175,000 miles on it, I decided to replace the plastic cap....because it's plastic and goes through a lot of temperature changes. Didn't want to risk a cracked cap and subsequent mess.

2x Same with my old '09. I replaced the cap at 100k miles. Did not have any issues with the old one and kept it in reserve just incase I had a problem. I used the AC ''kit''. Purchased from Rock Auto as not to get counterfeit junk that's common on Amazon or Fleabay.
