My gas guage on my 2006 Malibu LS goes from full to empty. Regardless of the amount of gas that I have in the tank. It will go from full to empty then back up to full then back down again. It'll stay up for a little bit sometimes while driving but it does not ever show the correct fuel level. Do I have to replace the whole fuel pump/sending unit? Or what should I check first? Please help....it's been going on since I bought the car 8 months ago

There was a recall or TSB to do with this. Contact GM directly with you VIN and they may pay for it's replacement.

I had a 2007 LS-fuel gauge failed twice in like 9 years-1st time it was covered by extended warranty. I believe Gen 6 Malibu is notorious for this failure-close to $500 for parts & labor but It’s been awhile

Check that-the fuel sensor-I doubt the fuel gauge was the issue

I just was informed by the previous owner that while she was driving the car one day it just shut off. Lost all power. She tried restarting it and taking the battery cables off and back and it didn't have anything. But when they got home(trailered) and tried starting in the morning, it started up with no issue at all whatsoever other than the gas gauge issue.

16 year old car-best to get it evaluated/diagnosed by a trusted & competent mechanic or reputable Chevy dealership (more $ but maybe better option)

Out of alll my recalls for my 2006 3.5l..... mever ad one for the gas guage..... and it reads full or empty
